Any one using Trick Shift

Im new to the forum and I just bought my 95 LSC. I notice a couple issues with the trans...
Very slow to get into gear. When you shift from P to R or any combo it just sits there fot maybe a second or two and them engages. Its a bit worse when going from D to R.
Also There is a pause while driving and shifting from 3 to 4 i think. Just enough to make you lean forward like you let your foot off and then it shifts and all is good.

Any Ideas.
The fluid is red and smells fresh. I was told it was changes about 50k ago. Im thinking of doing a new filter and using trick shift. My brother used it in his 95 t bird with a quick shift module and never had an issue.

Another issue I just noticed. While parked I can hear a vibration just inside the pan. I think it may be something just barely touching the ring gear because it goes faster when I rev it up a bit. I guess Ill see what it is when I get under it to do the tranny kit.

I'd appreciate any ideas from you all and look forward to being a part of this very cool forum.

Yes people use Trick Shift. Unfortunately 500 miles later they are no longer members here....

Ok, just kidding. But dont do the kit.

Fluid smell and color is not always a sign of its condition. Besides, 50k is well over the recommended interval.

But the problem sounds like the fluid level its low.

The hum is "normal" for 95.

I wasnt going to use a kit on mine. Just wondering how people like Trick shift compared to the merc V.

As for the hum..Its more like the sound a metal fan would make it you stuck a soda can in it almost like the old playing card in the spokes of your bike, but not as loud as either of those. Also it has only made that sound twice an while I was on a very slight incline facing down hill.
 
500 miles, more like 1000.

The JMod is best. Search the forum for info. Its practically free. All most have to buy is new drill bits and a couple gaskets. Although getting new vulcanized check balls is a good idea too. If you want you can switch to metal but that would only amuse us and not you :) lol

+1 and if you need the part numbers for the springs and accumulators, let me know because I still have the box and plastic that all the parts came in. Make sure to use Mercon V fluid. No telling what the last person might have used. The vibration you're hearing sounds like the TC may be ready to start acting up on you.
 
Part numbers would be awesome so I can see how much Im looking at needing to spend.

Are you saying you'd prefer Merc V over Trick shift? I'm not try to beat a head hores here I just wanna do this right and only once right now.

Could someone toss a link the the Jmod details at me.
 
Ok, the spring(s) part# I bought directly from my local Ford parts dept. are

F75Z 7F284 AA
F4AZ 7F247 A

The piston part# is F7AZ-7F251-AA

One spring will be purple and the other will be blue. Yes, I would go with only Mercon V fluid and flush the other out. Not just a drain but flush. Just my opinion on the fluid.

The cost for my springs and piston ran me around $60 to $65 with tax. Max may be able to get them for you cheaper but I needed mine the day I got them. For the J-Mod, don't go over the first set of drilling specs (drilling bigger holes) because it doesn't help but can hurt.

+2 merc V and if your gonna do a drain and fill instead of a flush (i feel flush is better) it has to be completely empty, drain the converter, theres a plug just gotta rotate the eng till you can see it and you gotta flush out the lines/cooler etc. dont wanna mix merc III with merc V
 
okay so its a "NO" for the trick shift. I'll stick to the recommended Merc V.
Exactly what does the J-Mod give you and why should one do it. Will it cause the u joint to wear faster due to harder shifts?

Yes, it's a "NO" if it's not Mercon V fluid and as for the J-Mod, the tranny will last longer, it allows more fluid flow, it will get you into gear quicker, it will give you firmer 2nd and 3rd gears at WOT or a little less but fairly normal shifts while driving normal. Nothing will happen to your U-joints because of the J-Mod. More reasons than I can mention for doing this mod.

I still feel like you have a bad torque converter and it's making the humming sound while idle. I could be wrong! Do you hear the same sound when you put it in drive or reverse? I would hate to see you get all of this done and then end up later down the road with shudder, all because of the TC. If you don't already have shudder, maybe you'll be ok.
 
No shudder going down the road. I heard the noise in park and one time while in D while I was parked on the same very slight incline facing downward, but I have not heard it again since.
What kind of shudder might I get from the TC. Is it a hesitation or a vibration while driving?
 
Yes, it will usually do it in OD and 3rd and as it worsens, it will do it in 2nd and if you try to burn the tires from a dead stop, it just won't do it anymore. I think you're ok, you just need to get those parts replaced and flush out that fluid and change the filter. :shifty: Oh yeah, J-Mod it too and you should be problem free from now on.

Shudder almost makes it feel like the car is missing or about to run out of gas.
 
Well no shudder for me then, I do a lil rough idle but Im thining plugs are needed, the guy i got it from had everything else done but not the plugs for some reason.
Is the Jmod easier than it looks cause I have never opened a trans except to pop a filter out and replace it. I do most of my mechanical work myself on all my vehicles but havent really open a trans up. anyone live near chico/sacramento or redding? Maybe we can schedule a mod meeting.
My HHR forum does that sometimes and its great. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the tip on draining the TC I didnt know there was a plug on it.

I see a couple of issues here.

1. the service interval on these trans is 30K MAX, your almost double that.

2. you said it "smells fresh", that is a BIG RED FLAG.. if he smell of the fluid didn't smell like "rotten fish oil"...then that trans has been driven 50K with the WRONG FLUID, which is Mercron 3.

Dont worry about putting some "special" B&M trick shift crap in there, when you only need to put the correct amount of the correct fluid in there.

Mercron V or Mercron 5 is what you want to use.

I did it on my 95 trans and it lasted until 360,000 miles and about 3 THOUSAND dragstrip passes.


flush and fill and change the filter, use mercron 5 and your trans should give you many more years of happy life.. unless running mercron3 for 50K hasn't already "hurt it"..
 
Ya Im going to use Merc V for sure. It does not smell like fish oil so Im guessing its refular atf. Also I checked his service records and it says 4Qts of ATF. Shouldnt it be 6 quarts? Fram filters are okay for the trans right?
I am going to do this drain and filter and refill soon. The only issue I have with this trans and might be normal is it downshifts kinda hard and really slows it down when it downshifts.

Thank you all very much for the help. I just lost my 1998 jaguar xj8 because the tranny went out and it was a $3000 part plus instal.

Oh Ya and after reading all about it I want to do the cobra intake swap, im sure my family will thank you for that when they dont see my for ever cause Im alway upgrading the Mark:lol:

The Cobra intake swap is really only needed for the slow Gen2s. :p
 
Whats the 1/4 mile average for a stock Gen 1?
I got on mine today and had it to the floor when it shifted to 2nd and it scratched a bit, suprised the hell outta me. It did hesitate for a secod before shifting so that might have had something to do with it, also trac control was on!
 
the torque converter shudder feels like rumble strips, you know the things when your approaching a stop sign, and the vibration in the pan sounds like the valve body buzz and if i remember correctly its "normal" around that year
 
how much does the cobra intake and what other parts do for ya. Anyone dynod after wards?
I guess I should find the proper thread for that question.
14.5-15.5 isnt bad for a larger stock luxury vehicle.
