Another intake tube and air filter thread

Hey everyone,

I am trying to put together a cheap and simple intake change for my car. First, yes, I have searched. I am not looking to change the MAF housing, only add the open element growl.

1. Is there anything I need to go between the intake tube and the rear of the MAF.

2. I am aware I will need an adapter for the face of the MAF to attach to the filter, such as an accufab 80mm unit. http://www.accufabracing.com/general.htm#MassAir

This ebay piece suggests 3inches, 76.4mm. Will this work? I can match it to the MAF perhaps?

I am buying an intake tube off of ebay (don't want to be left without an intake if I screw it up, and I want to drive while the epoxy and such are setting) and removing all of those helmholtz modeled air silencing chambers ( perhaps a reflective thermal surface), as well as removing the fender silencer. I will fab up a sheet metal heat shield.


Anyone who helps me, without scolding for beating a dead dog of a topic, will receive great praises.

you can do it for around $50 bucks just did mine the adapter for the throttle body is only $20. I used the stock tube as well
 
Dude... I have an extra intake tube... and a mass air housing. I could mod both of them up to work... I cut the flat part from my maf housing to accept a conical filter and removed silencers from the intake and smoothed them out.. Granted... it may take a little for everything to be done properly but id do it for yah for a good deal...;)
 
MarkVIII93, I'll have to look at an MAF housing to see exactly what you did. You just removed the flat front face (where those 4 screw wholes are) and clamped the conical filter over that? No need for an adapter in that sense.

Kracker, I think you mean MAF adapter. If so, where did you get it, and is it the same type as the ones found in the links?

Oh also, I meant I was going to mod up the stock intake tube, I'm just buying an extra one to do it. I will cut off the long skinny restriction and the circular one and mend it nice and air tight.
 
Pep boys is where i got the adapter ther are two sizes for ford ours is the larger of the 2 in a few i am going downstair for a smoke i can take pic and post if you would like

I have the front half of the adapter all figured out. I need a 4in ford bolt pattern MAF adapter and filter, with a nice clamp. I will have to order this from Summit, I can't find one on ebay or in the chain stores.

The back, I need something to fill the gap between the OD of the MAF housing and the ID of the stock air intake tube.

I think it is the part you've been talking about Kracker. I have not been able to find it online.

Can anyone get me the OD of the MAFs housing and the ID of the intake tube so I can see if I can get a piece at the home depot this afternoon.
 
got all these items at Pepboys and only spent maybe $50-$60 bucks tops-I removed the silencer, and have the air filter blocked off with aluminum (hose is on edge of panel so I won't bleed to death when I'm in there working) so it draws from the hole where the silencer was located.

Threw in other photos of it since it's clean, LOVE MY MARK!

thanks, it runs great and I love the sound front and back-no mufflers, no intake silencers, great gas mileage, very quick and responsive, no codes (ever)...runs perfectly:p :I :I :rolleyes: :D

just messin' with ya, sarcastic`humor (earlier references)-yea. I have lots of red cars. didn't plan it that way, just happened. I actually did not like much when I first got it as it replaced a light blue/blue interior 93 that I LOVED until it got killed by a crazy south American FEMALE driver-my Mark ALWAYS gets positive comments from friends, strangers-I do not use it as a daily driver, and it is (sometimes)garaged, but has to compete for space with others-still one of my favorites, far be it from me to CONFUSE you-:rolleyes: :shifty: :bow: I'm 0nly 1220 behind you..gotta (try) catch up....

It looks like you got a 3in to 2.5in adapter for the back, an MAF to 4in cone adapter and a brightly colored 4in cone filter, along with a u bend 4in pipe.

Could you see what size that rear adapter is, if you don't remember, so I can go pick one up tomorrow. My car is not in my possession, currently being "serviced" by a pal because I'm busy as hell.

from the intake tube to the MAF is 4" on the intake tube side and 3.5" into the MAF-the one from the cone filter is 4" both sides-hope this helps

Hey Kid... don't let it bother you.. some members are like that...

All I know is I've had the privilege to meet you, .. you offer very good help and support here and offer members parts when you come across them at better then fair or eBay prices ... Plus you like to have fun ..

At your age you know more about cars then many of you haters will ever know... and you are not like other younger members.. very mature for your age.

Maybe you make a few mistakes with words or when you're trying to have a little fun those who don't understand fun just don't get it... They'll keep on hounding you as they have little to do..

Also, I'm one for putting old myths to death. I am considering running by car on the dyno with the stock air box, then with the best open element set up I can conjure up. I am a firm believer that Ford did a good job on the entire package with this, and their air box with a clean filter and no silencers will make the most power of any setup we can throw at it stock, especially after the car is up to standard operating temps. If anyone is interested in coming to CT and doing a group rate dyno, or if someone in the tri state has some ins, I would be down.

You may ask, why would I screw with it then? Because, I want to hear "ShhhhVooooom gurgle gurgle gurgle" (exhaust mods too) compared to the stock "......wizzzzzz......", even if the power is the same or a hair less.

My car went alot faster, at the track with the stock air box and a paper filter than it did with the LMS megameter and a K&N conical.

MPH increased by 3MPH which as many know, MPH is what you based your HP from.

Tiffany's car with a cold air kit "slowed down", until she went back to the stock air box and filter.

two different cars, two different drivers on the same dragstrip on the same day, both saw the same results...

Just say NO to open air conical filters, unless your just trying to impress your "ricer buddies".. {LOOK I GOT A CONICAL FILTER TOO!)
 
Okay,

It looks like there is not enough room to just stick the cone right after the MAF adapter if you do not use the stock flex tubing there. Do you think it would work if I tried to clamp that stock flex tubing over a 4 in to 3.5 in reducer, or are the reducers typically not rigid enough.

Otherwise, a short run of 4 inch tube could be in order. Does anyone else have pictures of their home made setups so I can see what else works.
