Ford Announces Return of the Taurus

CHICAGO (AP) - On his first day at work as chief executive of Ford Motor Co., Alan Mulally had a question that no one could answer: Why get rid of the Taurus?
Long before he was hired last September, the struggling company had decided to stop making what once was the most popular car in the U.S., a decision that had him perplexed.
"How can it go away?" he remembered asking. "It's the best-selling car in America."

WHAT?!?! Out of all the cars to bring back.... The Taurus?? Come on

Actually, it is a good move. Now they will sell much more 500's than they ever did. Think of it like this, they build a car for over 20 years and get gigantic brand equity with the name. It was one of Ford's top selling cars for a long time. Why kill the name when brand recognition is at a premium? This is actually a smart move on Mullaly's part.

Now, if they can get the Lincoln pukes to change the alphabet soup names like MKZ and MKX changed back to recognizable names like Continental and Mark then they will have something.

Ken, don't mind Nick, he secretly wanted the Taurus to come back. :D

Taurus is a very well-known brand (probably second only to Mustang among Fords), and before Ford let it rot on the vine in the late 90s, it had a pretty good reputation. All in all, I think it's a good move.

However, Ford really needs to come up with a coherent plan and stick to it. First they released the Zephyr and then almost immediately renamed it to the MKZ, then they can't seem to decide whether it's pronounced "Mark Z" or "M-K-Z". They said the next Lincoln model would get a Yamaha V8, then a regular V6, then a twin-turbo V6, and now with the Hurricane engines on the way I wouldn't be surprised if they throw those into the mix. And now they discontinued the Taurus, then turned around and decided to begin sticking Taurus badges on Five Hundreds.

If these things were isolated incidents, it would be cool. There's certainly nothing wrong with admitting you made a boneheaded decision and promptly fixing it. But right now Ford is just confusing everyone with their neverending renaming and changes of plans. It makes them look like they are aimless, have no strategy or organized plans for the future, and instead they're trying to turn the company around by randomly grabbing ideas from a hat and seeing if any of them work. It can't be good for building investor/customer confidence, which is especially dangerous given Ford's current state of affairs.

Give 'em time, they'll probably change the name to "TFH" (Tarus Five Hundred).:D

yup the 500 are getting rebadged and turned into the taurus and the freestyle "crossover veh" (station wagon) is getting renamed the taurus wagon ugh wtf are we thinking

all we need is ford to rename the focus to the contour...lmao

or better yet..... rename the focus to the escort!!

MarkVIII

i think they better start working on another true mark. cadillac would have nothing to combat unless they ressurect the eldorado "this isnt heaven though".what ever heppened to the days when you could go to a dealership and sit in a roomy luxurious car and step on the pedal and feel balls. the big 3 is being polluted as well as most the the american market into thinking small 4 cylinder cars that break in half if the wind picks up are good. sorry for the spelling and i dont like writing fancy for threads

I feel that ford has failed to evolve. The Ls has pretty much looked the same for 5-6 years now. The ford trucks are pretty much the same for the last 5-6 years (just changed the frontend). the five hundred is new, but boring. the mkz is too much for the majority, and too boring for the people that can afford it (they buy bmw or mercedes) the cheap escort went away, the reliable taurus went away, the mustang is just getting boring (unless you have the gt with all the extras)

look at Chrysler, 300m to 300c Dodge, stratus to magnum, neon to srt4, stratus to srt 8, dodge dakota to srt 10, Chevy, s10 to colorado, cavalier to cobalt, malibu to impala, nissan stayed with the same names, but has new up to date designs, new maxima, new altima, new murano, titan, and their other suvs.

The move back to Taurus would be excellent, especially if it's more than just rebadging the remaining 500s. They better include some styling changes to differentiate the two.

I couldnt agree more...

Now, if they would just change the name of the "Fusion" to the "Tempo", they'd be all set.:runaway:

Damn all that, he needs to get his designers to work on a MkIX so we can have a new Lincoln to proud of. There is still room for the luxury sport coupe in the auto world, look at the Infinty G35, BMW 645/M6, we need the MkIX and we need it bad.

i said it before and i will say it again. ford is never going to bring back the mark. they will probably make a 3rd concept and jerk us around for 2-3 months and then scrap it. all i have to say is, do not hold your breath.

Ah men to that... and I also find it funny how GM and Ford wonder why they're not doing as well as they used to. I think it's about time they find some new engineers or take the Army's approach and find a few good geniuses hand them a blank check and say "Make us something else that's cool and efficient"

don't mean to awaken old topics, but did anyone else see pics of the SHO new concept http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-ford-taurus-sho-concept/ looks pretty cool.

The way i see it they have the new mustang platform well established now, its almost retarded not to make a new mark on it. I mean basically, with a good design, they could be selling a car that costs little more than a fully loaded mustang to make, using the same factories and equiptment, for $40-50K. And they's sell at that. I'd but one anyway.

If the MKR makes it to production...i don't really see that car being very producible, i could be wrong though. We'll just have to wait and see.
