How hard is it to change the alternator on a 2000 V6? I need to get a new one.. can anybody give me some tips??
thanks

I would have to say that in 4 days you could have gotten under the car and taken a look to see what's involved.

Can't be all that difficult. Then again, it's a Lincoln, so maybe it is. :lol:

sorry - I have swapped mine a few times - but it's a V8 so I really do not know how applicable it is to your car.

An alternator is an alternator - disconnect the battery, loosen the belt, undo the live wire, unplug the regulator, undo the three mounting bolts - and you are out.

The issue with the V8 was finding the 'right' position to twist the alternator to have it slide out between the suspension and out the bottom of the car. When you get it right - it falls out, but until then you swear you have to cut or bend something...

you should figure it out and make a DIY for the V6 owners with the same question. Altenators can only be so hard!

yeah quik.. its tight under the hood of these things.. you cant get to anything.. what kind of alternator should I get to replace the old one?

So there shouldn't be any issues with using the same charging wire. The original alternater only puts out 55 amps. That seems like it is the bare minimum to keep the car and its functions running. Why would Ford design the alternater to barely do the job? In a car like this shouldn't one put an alternater in that would be able handle this everyday abuse.
Its just that I've noticed that when I'm at idle my head lights seem to dim a little. As soon as I apply gas, they brighten. its always done this.

Here's what I know:
Gen1 = 105amps @ 6000 rpm
Gen2 = 125amps @ 6000 rpm (2000 engine rpm)

the Gen2 upgrade to deal with the electric fan...

125? That's higher than I thought. I think it is 110 OEM. Gen2 of course.

I want to upgrade to the 220amp eventually.

Shouldn't do that! Alternator may be going bad. Check connectors just to make sure things are clean.

The stock cable on a 2002 V8 looked like 6ga. Definitely thicker than 8ga.

at idle, I think the alternator puts out 55 amps @ 600 rpm, according to the specs on a stock replacement, but my car has a bad diode. It hasn't had this problem for the 3 years I've owned it. but oddball you are probably right though.
