Air-Fuel Ratio?

I installed a K&N intake on my LS last week and a few days later, I noticed the engine is stuttering when I decelerate at normal speeds. If I give it gas up to around 45-50 mph or more then slowly ease off the gas a little, the engine stutters until I give it more gas or completley take my foot off the pedal. The CEL is NOT on and this only happens at 45+mph. Did the addition of the K&N intake throw off the air-fuel ratio? Should I "reset" the computer by disconnecting the battery? Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Most likely, your MAF sensor is not reading correctly now because the airflow around and through it may not be the pattern it was designed for.

Aren't you supposed to disconnect the battery when you install them?

I think so but I didn't bother becasue it only took like a half hour to install the intake. I thought the battery had to be disconnected for a few hours to reset the computer. Hopefully disconnecting the battery overnight tonight will resolve the issue.

Clean the MAF first.
If it's a washable filter, make sure you didn't over-oil it. The oil will pull through and contaminate the MAF. Not a big deal, just have to clean it.
Use the correct cleaning spray from the parts store (MAF cleaner, literally).
A one minute (or less!) battery disconnect will clear the long term fuel trim, which is the effect you're going for there. That's fine, too, but it'll auto-learn regardless.

I rinse my K&N when it is dirty and just reinstall, No oil. It seems to always be oily anyways?

I can't imagine spraying on more.

So I reset the computer, cleaned the MAF sensor, mixed in some fuel injector/engine cleaner with the gas but it is still doing the same thing. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the transmission. It almost feels like it is have trouble figuring out what gear it is suppossed to be in but it only does this in higher gears. It is fine in the lower gears. Perhaps the solenoids are going out in the trans.

A failing COP is more likely...

It could be but I figured I would get a CEL or at least a code if a coil went bad. I did a diagnostics test on it today after I drove it awhile and it came back with no faults.

I never got a code or light with any of the four that have failed on me so far.

by the time the miss gets bad enough for the light to come on, the coil has to pretty much be toast, one of the coils could be just starting to fail, and its always more noticeable when the is load on the engine, every time i have had a coil fail, i have always started to feel it when in a high gear and barely trying to speed up (slow enough acceleration for the car to not down shift) then it will start to developed a slight miss once and a while at full acceleration up high in the RPMs but not until the top of third or fourth gear. never a light, sometimes a fail safe, but never a miss related light

Sounds exactly like what mine is doing. I am going to replace all 8 coils. I found them for 310 dollars online. (DG515 motorcraft). I will probably change out the plugs also because I am close to 60K miles. Thanks everyone for the input!

There's no probably about it. You need to change the associated spark plug when you change a COP. A failing COP can cause damage to a spark plug. A damaged or bad plug can cause a COP to fail.

me too.....

great thread,
This just happened to me friday evening.... thought it may be bad gas, but have emptied the tank and still have the issue.... all the same symptoms listed above.... missing at idle but mainly during a load and slow acceleration.
I replaced my plugs sunday afternoon but that didnt work. Guess im going to purchase some COP's.
I guess I shouldnt complain, since the car has 85K on it now and this is the only failure so far...... 2005 silver ls V8

one more thing

what is the best COP's for the money?
motorcraft was mentioned above for 310.00, I want good ones but I dont want to drop alot of money....

Just got back from dropping the car off at the dealership.... will know this afternoon if it is fixed.....
Thanks everyone for the reply and the help....
