Hi all,

Just a quick post for anyone looking to do an affordable component speaker conversion for their front doors - I just installed a set of Rockford Fosgate Prime R1652-S 6.5" units in the front doors, to replace the stock speakers in my 01 LS V6 Sport with Alpine head unit. I placed the tweeter in the same location as used by others on this forum - see photo attachment of passenger door.

These speakers are quite cheap - retail is about $120/pair, but they are easily availble online or on E-Bay for $50-$60. Obviously they are not the last word in quality, but they sound tight and clean and work really well with the stock head unit - a major upgrade from stock. All you need in addition is the 6x9 to 6.5" plastic adapter bracket, some short self tapping screws and some custom hole drilling of that and the stock plastic adapter in the door to make the woofers fit nicely. There is not even a separate crossover unit to install, as it is built into the tweeter.

Note - don't bother with the 5.25" version of this speaker set - it sounds OK too (same tweeter unit), but the 5.25" woofer just does not have the bass output and is significantly less efficient than the 6.5" unit (efficiency is the key spec to pay attention to when choosing an aftermarket speaker to work well with lower powered OEM head unit amplifiers). I made this mistake and ented up pulling the 5.25's out after a few weeks and buying another set of 6.5".

I decided to leave the stock rears, as they are in such a sucky position that all they really do is add some mid-bass fill, so I don't think it is worth speading money and time on them. My car does not have the rear deck subs, but bass overall is tight and deep enough for me (for now......:)

The only bummer is that the tweeters have the maker's name stenciled on them in white, which I thinks looks rather cheesy, but I may paint my second set to match the door trim and install those if they come out well.

Sorry - I did not take pics of the woofers themselves, or during the install, but they look pretty conventional (they have a red colored coil support and the cone is made of stiff poly (not paper). They seem to be well made for the price. Of course none of this is visible anyway...

Bass is very good - at least as much as stock (probably a little more extension) - but the bass, mid-bass and midrange quality is much tighter and more controlled. The amp in the stock (Alpine) head unit is actually quite clean when it's driving something better than a mushy paper cone 6x8! The tweeters themselves are a little too bright and "shouty" for my taste, but you can tame them with a 1 point drop on the treble control - what can you expect for $50/pair......:).

Cool.. I'm trying to find something with excellent bass and I guess full range.. For what I want, I guess I will be spending some dough..

A local shop near me has a deal going on buy two sets of Rockford fosgate power series components and get a matching rf amp for a buck

Focal? <-- polar opposite of the thread's title.

Anything component will put the stock system to shame.

Yes, but I listen to a lot of bass/higher ranger (yes.. Totally different types).. I was thinking Clarion but I'm open to anything really as long as it meets my needs..

Don't know about that. My THX sounds pretty darn good.

I have the THX system and it sounds good but component is much better.

And i was talking about the non THX systems.

You do know the THX speakers are component, right? They are a plate speaker with a separate tweeter and woofer.

Theyre not very well made though.

The paper is very thin....im not arguing that they dont sound good because they do...better than anything else ive ever heard come from a factory.

Thats why im still using them and just added a 10" sub and amp to the system.

The stock units appear to be a dual cone, sure - but having the tweeter up high does wonders for the high frequencies and the imaging. Not to mention decent cone materials and a circular woofer, which just works better than an elliptical speaker cone (of equal surface area) any day.

The base stereo does have paper whizzer cone speakers. The Alpine and THX have plate speakers.

My car is an 01 with Alpine system and the stock speakers are concentric paper cone. Definately not plate speakers. Maybe the Gen 2 cars were upgraded ..........?

Gen II has the THX system...it was an additional option which includes the touchscreen gps and 6cd changer built in.

That is the system we are talking about and the oem for it is pioneer i believe.

Indeed - that's whole different animal........:)

Actually, THX is just a certification. Pioneer did make the THX hardware.

So has anybody tried to upload a more modern firmware like the ones on the newer pioneers??
