Admittedly StoOpiD question?

Without making a mess to find out for myself... On our radiators which trans line is the supply from the trans and which is the return to the trans?
 
If you think about how a radiator works..it's easy...the upper is from the trans, the lower is the return
 
I figured as much and thought so but was having a dumb azz moment! And now it is memorialized on LVC for all time lol. Although you never know with these cars when Ford may have ignored conventional logic. They did on so many other things on these cars!
 
Well all radiators work off the same principal, gravity fed warm fluids, downward over time with the aid of wind speed for a cooling effect
 
Yeah I felt really stupid as soon as I hit the post button lol. But it was already done. Best I could do was change the heading! At least so far I haven't had 20 people telling me to turn in my wrenches for asking such a dumb question!:D
 
Uh, hot fluid flows down....means the upper line is the feed and the bottom is return...do I have to take my lines off and YouTube it?

Both lines run between the trans and radiator lol. Just one takes fluid from the trans to the radiator and the other returns it from the radiator to the trans. Sapperfire is right I'm sure. That is how a radiator works. When I asked this question I was having a brain fart because I was looking at the aftermarket trans cooler I bought and one line goes in on the right and on comes out on the left with no difference in height because it is a small cooler. That and a six pack kind messed with my head for a second lol.
 
A local trans guy told me transmissions are just like humans, things go in their mouth and out their ass. So if this is correct and sapperfire is also correct, the lines must cross one another on the way...
 
I was just saying what the top line does

top line is the return line on the trans also. So in the top of the trans. out the bottom of the trans to the rad. witch is in turn the bottom and then out the top

Well I'm going to put the cooler in tomorrow so one way or another I will find out for sure which is which. I will post up and put this to rest when its done. I'm not trying to bust your balls. I do appreciate all the info from everybody:D

I wonder if he was talking out of his mouth or his ass, because he's wrong. :p

TCI has a tech page which shows the return and feed line positions for various transmissions HERE. Most have the return at the top, but not all.

I've attached an excerpt that shows the lines switched between different Ford transmissions also.

And the Gen 2 return line at the radiator is the upper line. ;) Makes sense if you think about it a bit, the transmission fluid enters the radiator where the engine coolant is at it's lowest temp.

Don't know for sure about the Gen 1.

My wife is bringing my car to my shop right now...let's see

...after playin with my kid for a couple mins a got it on a lift...the upper line thermo-mic reading was 164* and the lower line reading was 128* ....so you tell me which is which...I even called Lincoln and they couldn't even give me a part number on the lines nor a flow chart...I'm not taking mine apart because my trans fluid is brown..new fluid could ruin my clutches...they only fit one way, so in my opinion if a part is being replaced, flow doesn't matter, as long as it actually FLOWS

Please keep in mind, if your fluid is not RED in your transmission, you MUST reuse your old fluid or risk transmission failure
 
Ok, I made a mess for you....

I popped my hood and disconnected the line closest to the battery ( upper line) and my trainee cranked...and started ( damn it) my car, fluid sprayed From the Radiator all over my engine and the floor..a 2 second run will yeild about a qt of fluid..

So the upper line is the return line ( at radiator) and the lower line is the feed ...now I wonder why the temp reading was like it was, how odd

Lol thank you for the info! I just figured that out at around lunch time. Im in the process of installing my new pumpkin and driveshaft with new trans cooler.

Thanks to everybody for their help with this. Guess my StOopiD questid wasnt that stupid after all!:p
 
lololol this thread has so much win.

aint that a fun mess sapperfire. ford flip flops it alot between models, what about late model super duty's, its sideways across the bottom
