I needed a new car and I got talked into trying an 06 Acura TL. (my son still has my LS) I've had it a couple of weeks now and I wanted to post my thoughts on the two cars. I seriously considered a new LS, but I have never owned a car by any manufacturer other than the Big 3 and let myself get talked into trying the Acura. Here are my thoughts:

The LS flat outhandles the Acura. Not even close. It handles better and stops better.

The 01 LS8 and the Acura have identical horsepower ratings....and the Acura is a V6. That being said, there is no way in God's green earth the Acura will run with the LS...especially above 70 mph. I don't care who says what...the LS8 runs a whole lot stronger.

The LS comes with a lot more amenities than the TL. Auto headlights, an outside temp gauge that actually works above 115 degrees (seriously...the TL quits at 115 degrees) and cooled seats come to mind. Cooled seats are a huge plus here in AZ. Everyone should offer them on their upscale line of cars.

The LS is RWD...the TL FWD. To each his own preference.

Now, here are a few things where the Acura shines:

I got it with navigation. The navigation and all associated functions work with the car in motion. Nothing is locked out. It seems only the Big 3 lock out their navigation systems in motion. The Asian and European manufacturers don't. Strange. But I think it's BS that I have to stop the car to punch something in or find a POI...especially when it can be handled so easily now days with very little danger. I don't have to worry about that with the TL...or the modded AVIC-Z1 I have in my wife's Aviator. However, the TL does not offer XM NavTraffic and that is a HUGE oversight in my book.

The voice recognition system on the Acura is amazing. You can control so much of the car...and get so much information...it's unbelievable. It's almost spooky. For example, if I punch in an address into the navi, at any time along the route I can simply say "how far to destination?" and it will give me the distance. Same with how long it will take. There are a lot more things like that.

The Bluetooth on the TL is very good too. Hooks easily and gives a nice clear conversation on both ends...all 100% hands free from answering to hanging up.

The car is very comfortable to drive and fits me well. There is a lot of adjustments in the seats. I actually fit better in it than I do the LS. It's just a difference in ergonomics between the two manufacturers.

Fuel mileage is better in the TL...but not significantly so. But still, any help here is appreciated!

The resale value on the TL is flat amazing compared to the LS. That is probably the single biggest reason I went with it. It's amazing what one of these cars is worth when it's 2 years old compared to a lot of others.

The main complaints I have against the TL is the outside temp gauge quits at 115 (it's designed to do that) Stupid. There's about 100 days a year here where there will be times it will quit. Really stupid. The a/c system sucks big time in my opinion. When you leave the car sit outside in the sun all day, it can easily take 4 or 5 MILES before it starts cooling...and even longer before it really takes affect. My Cobra, LS, and the wifes Aviator all start cooling in 3 or 4 blocks...not miles. But it's funny...if I leave it in the garage or shade, even if it's 115 degrees...it starts cooling almost immediately. It's like the sun heats the ducting so hot that it takes a lot of time to cool the ducting before it can deliver cool air to the cabin. Tinted windows and a sun screen have helped...but not significantly so.

I have joined an Acura forum to find out about all the little quirks and tricks to the car. They are very technical minded folks...but they are very weird. One guy calls his car his "Precious". GAG! Makes me want to puke! For God's sake...it's a Honda with lock washers!!

Congrats on your new car, and please post your further impressions.

I agree the Japanese have the best automotive electronics in the industry, and it shows. OTOH, I've never been convinced that the HP ratings on the Hondas and Acuras reflected real-world performance. Torque counts for something, as owners of American cars can attest. Thanks for confirming this.

I too wish the factory LS navigation worked while moving (setting POI and stuff) but I got to tell you, the voice recognition on it is pretty neat. I just wish it understood me a little better because I hate having to repeat myself. But then again it is a women that I'm talking to.

You should line the 2 up and see which one is quicker. A friend of mine has an '02 TL Type-S. That car seems like the transmission shifts more aggressively and quicker than my LS. It also seems to be much quicker off the line. What are your thoughts on that? Will the TL blow the LS away?

yea they are very nice cars in my opinion.. definitely up at the top of the " bang for your buck " category. my co-worker has an 04 and i drove it one day and that thing had so many buttons all over the steering wheel and on the console i was almost lost.. lol.. really nice.. the 04`s i think come with 270hp stock and at the track we were neck and neck.. i dont know why they dropped the hp for the newer models though. he won a couple races because he was better on reaction time but i was getting alot better 60 foot and 1/8 mile times. his best for the day was 10.1 and mine was 9.7...great car though.

i have a video of my 00ls8 running an 04 tl. lemme know if i should post it.

Yea they are nice, if I could get a loaded one I would but than again there are many of them, just like GP's here so I'd rather have the LS.

I really like the a/c is the LS aswell. Is very, very cold but only if it has not been in the sun for a extended period of time like days when its 90+ and it sits outside of work for 4 or more hours than it takes forever and I find myself turning up the fan more than I like(do not like it above 2 bars).

Post it! I would love to see it.:D

heres the link to one of the videos. i think i won that race.. it ended up 2-2

i think i can get better times though. we are planning a day to go out there again now that i have new tires and everything so hopefully i can have better times out the hole, and possibly run without the traction on. just a day of fun since i dont race my ls daily.

Now from what I have heard the mannual TLs can go 0-60 in 5.7 if you know how to shift it.

We'll have to do that some day soon! It would be interesting. My guess the overall gearing in the TL is better off the line...and I think the cars would be close in the 1/4 mile. But on top...no comparison. The LS will walk away from it.

I agree with the 6 spd being a quicker car. But I didn't want a manual transmission. One car with that is enough!! Besides, the dealer was very upfront with me about that...the manual transmission models aren't worth near as much on trade down the road. They have a more difficult time selling them. Made sense to me.

My dad had on 01 cl type-s and it was quick, but the front wheel drive is a huge turnoff for that car. Even in easy driving you feel the tranny shift. I think that the acura will give you less problems though in the long run.

True, but the CL's are know for having bad trannys. I was going to trade in the LS for one a few weeks ago, but wasnt impressed with the car at all.

yea.. i was in that same one i raced in that video posted above a couple days ago and i also drove it the same day at the track. it has alot of gadgets but it kinda felt as though the car didn`t want to move at all when i hit the gas ( not wot). i was kinda surprised because i thought it would have been alot smoother( transmission wise) for a 30 thousand + car. the same one also has some memory issues at 37000 miles. it wont remember seat positions and some other stuff. but like every other car it has its issues but i think i still prefer my ls... still a very nice car though.
