I am hoping that I can get an answer to this question. My car is an 2002 3.9l LS. I have done CArfax on it plus the other one that was free on this site. All the mileages agree it appears that no one has messed with the car. Initially it was made for the foreign market ie Canada. It was brought into the US and was a rental car for one year then it went to one private owner. Here is the annoying part I get overspeed warnings on the highway, the car chimes in reverse also in sport mode I always start out in second gear. I would like to get rid of these issues. My ford dealership will reflash the PCM for 106.00. Will this get rid of these rental car crap things. Would a custom tune do the same thing?

Without a custom tune, you are stuck with the "start in 2nd gear" issue.
I've heard various claims about the "over-speed and reverse" warnings, but I don't think that they are a Canadian thing. At least, I don't hear the Canadians on this site complaining about this.

a custom tune will get you down to first when using SST (all LS's start in 2nd in this mode).. the others seem like something a scan tool could fix. I could be wrong though

My understanding was the overspeed crap etc was set by the rental company. So I can disregard the tranny issue. Ford will reflash the pcm but makes no guarantees that it will remove those items. I have looked and looked but not found anyone who has removed it.

I'd try a different dealer... It should be a programming thing they can change without the reflash... MY.02

Are you sure that the beeps are coming from the cluster (it's what would have to be reprogrammed, not the PCM), and not from some third party add on device under the dash?

Let me check that out.

IIRC, the chimes can be caused by either the battery being disconnected for an extended period of time (months) of cluster tampering. In either case the dealer should be able to rectify the situation.

Overspeed warnings? Like it says that on the cluster or it just beeps and you assume that's what it meant? I wouldn't be surprised if they installed something extra.

When I get the warning the cruise control light flashes then down in the status box is displays the words overspeed warning. It is triggered when I cross ~70MPH. Which is really not hard to do. I have verified the miles on the car about 74XXX through carfax and the other one that was on this site. It is possible that the car sat for a while. Problem where I live in CT there is only one Ford dealership nearby gotta do some driving to get to another. Of course CT is one small state. Thing is before I waste money fixing these issues I would spend the money on a custom tune.

I'd be surprised if a custom tune for the PCM could stop the cluster from doing this. Two different computers.

Well the noises are coming from the cluster. But with all this help here now I can call up the dealership. Thanks a lot.
