I picked up a 1999 cobra rear pumpkin with 3.55 gears. I want to just swap the unit instead of gears. Can someone post a link or let me know what all is involved? I have never worked on an IRS car, only SRA stangs. A write up would be grand, but ANY info would be great!

Thank yall so much!

KustomizinKid posted the guide below a while back, and I think I will follow it. However, are there any seals etc. that I should replace while in there? And, is the cobra housing the same so that I can re-use the stock one piece driveshaft? My car is a 1993.

Thanks.

You need a grinder what a cut off wheel.... here is how I did it on kirk's 97... took about 2 hours.

Drop exhaust.
Take off drivers side tire
Take off brake caliper and bracket as one part, slide off the rotor.
Undo the front knuckle spindle bolt, cut off half the head of the bolt
Undo all the knuckle bolt and slide the knuckle and cv out as one unit.
Pop the driver cv out of the diff, not all the way but just unclip
Take off the abs sensors
Undo the driveshaft
Undo the diff mounts and slide it out.

Reverse to reinstall.

a 03 housing has a bigger flange that connects the ds to the pumpkin so i would say
a 99 is the same I used the stock flange from the mark.
You can replace the 3 seals in the diff.
I didn't use a grinder on anything though but I see why he did.
also half shaft nuts are a 36mm and you will need a torque wrench that goes to 250lbft.

Is there a specific name for these 3 seals? Is this the same swap you did? About how long did it take if so?

thanks

I believe your 99 cobra pumpkin will have 31 spline side gears, which you will need to swap to 28 spline mark viii's if you are using your stock shafts.

no the 99 is the only cobra IRS with 28 spline in the pumpkin
I did a 04 pumpkin In my 97 I had to put 31 spline half shafts in mine

do you use mustang shafts? I have heard varied story's about if they work or not. If i remember they're .5" shorter than the mark shafts?

i was to lazy to change the seals in all i think it took 3.5 hours thats with changing out both half shafts
2 Cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing seals
1 drive pinion seal
when changing the flange you should record the torque required to maintain rotation of the pinion (inch-pound) before taking off the pinion nut. When putting on new pinion nut you must hit the same torque required to maintain rotation of the pinion.

Yes I used cobra shafts they are shorter but I have never had a problem

Cobra shafts will work JUST fine.

I'm looking for a set right now actually. I have a 10,000 mile terminator Take-out pumpkin that I want in the VIII.
