So I can score a 5 speed out of a 96 mustang with a 4.6 real cheap. That should work with one or two slight changes ... right?

i think you will need to move the shifter.

i think the 05+ 3650 has the shifter in the correct spot.

You would need to build a shifter box extension to get the handle in the correct spot, otherwise it comes out almost under the dash. You would also need a different driveshaft, a pedal, all the clutch hydraulics....

96 will be a T45. You will need to modify the shifter location to make it work.

Thanks. I can get it for $50, it does need some work but it's not too bad. It is a T45 and I have never built a modern tranny so I thought it might be fun and educational.

If I do this it will be my third auto to standard swap. The last one was a 1 ton GMC ex tow truck ... in the snow.

There is A LOT required to do the swap. You need to find a clutch pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder, drive shaft, relocate the PCM, clutch, PP, something to calibrate your speedometer, and a lot of fabrication to get the shift linkage to pop up in the floor.

It's doable, but you are doing it the hard way.

Oh. There's an easy way? Another tranny that might fit better and not need a shifter relocate perhaps?

I have seen some stuff here on hung clutches and i would try that before going hydraulic, but I would not put too much effort into that if it became a real bear.

Still if I have to rip it that far apart then some fabrication is not that big a deal. I can haywire at a master level but just down the street is a master mechanic who just restores stuff, all day, every day. Two blocks away, country blocks mind you, is the guy who did my driveshaft for my Cutlass. He has skills and a very nice shop.

I can make it happen but any advice that saves work and money is very much appreciated and anyway this is not something I will do real soon, but this transmission is a good deal.

Check out this build thread at LOD. Jeremi went with a 3650, but there is lots of good info and pics regarding the clutch pedal and hydraulics as well, about half way into the thread.

You'll probably need to set up an account to see the pics though.

I have one. I have looked at that thread, it's a good one.

I]ll have a look at the T45 in a few days. If it's as good as he says I might buy it but I understand at least a shifter relocation is needed.

Work.

Lots of work.

Skip the T45 and just invest in the 05 and up 3650.

This is from someone who's been there, done that.
