Here's a new one, wifey comes home - "Car's Broken".

Start it up, it pegs to 4k rpm. I try to get it to kick-down by flooring it, it drops to 2500rpm, but stays there.

WTF - stuck IAC? Throttle body? TPS? Vacuum leak? Just too cold out? Can't really look at it now, have to go to work in 15 mins.

Any quick ideas? She's going to use my car for work tomorrow, I'm going to need to 'fix' this POS tomorrow.

Just a quick one:

Check the throttle cable isn't hung up or binding and check the throttle butterflies aren't sticking.

What year?

Try unplugging the IAC and see what happens. My 97 dies when I do that, yours might be stuck.

Yup, sorry guys - after all this time I haven't had a sig going on yet to show the years of the cars...

It's a 94, and yep - 4k rpm. What's sick is that I think she drove around for her clients like that - neutral drops essentially, getting it into gear .

Friggen woman is going to be walkin' soon.

Will check the obvious, am going to pull out the wiper motor tray (again!) to get access down there.

Will parts from the 96 Tbird (4.6L) interchange with the Mark8 motor? Such as IAC and TPS? I know they're different, but you never know with a Furd product.

It may be a big vaccum leak, so with a leak that big see if you can hear any hissing under the hood

My guess would be that it needs a new IAC and while you're back there, change the TPS and make sure to check the rubber (T) where the vacuum hoses connect. The IAC is no fun at all to change. Don't want her clients to get whiplash. Also, removing the hood makes a huge difference.

If the rubber (T) is looking good, try the IAC first and I think you'll be good to go unless you have a vacuum leak somewhere else. I have a 94 and my dad has a 93 and I had to change his IAC for him. While I was at it, I done his TPS too. Before any work was done, he had a 2500 rpm idle and when everything was completed, he had a 1300 rpm idle. Turns out that the rubber (T) had a leak. Fixed that and now he has a 800 rpm idle. Now he's happy and we have a small ratchet stuck in the wall of the garage. You'll see!

LOL, yep, a few tools were thrown yesterday :D! Used up the whole book of profanities as well. There's never a Ford engineer around to kick in the nuts when you want to. What's so friggen important behind the firewall right there, that they couldn't have given 2-3" of space ?

So far, the IAC and TPS are off, and out. I have just got home from work, and have brought a new IAC and TPS, and will install them shortly. Paid $120 inc. taxes for them including a new gasket for the throttle body.

Moving the hood up is a good idea for sure, I popped the struts, and propped a broom under there, it's almost vertical. Also for future readers (through searches), when you have the wiper cowl off, tape up or bend back the one tab for the wiper assembly - it's a sharp bugger!

I cannot say with any certainty that there is no vacuum leak, as I didn't spend any time under the hood with it running. And it's hard to hear for leaks when the car's bellowing away at 4k rpm's. But I will take a closer look at the T (presuming it's the one that plugs into the throttle body?).

As for the wifey, she works as a support worker, it's funny+sad that she's now got my Cougar, which is loud, shifts hard+fast, and very low - part of her job is to tote old people around. They'll love me for fixing the Mark when she's got it back :).

So I feel like a tool replying to myself and all, but the job is done .

Well, almost - I have to put the wiper assembly back in, but I'll do that tomorrow. Or on the weekend. Whenever.

It fires up fine, about 1500rpm or so, then drops to 800 where it's supposed to be.

I don't know which part fixed it, but I wasn't going to be back in there 2x. I would hazard to say that it was more difficult putting the IAC back into the car, trying to get those bolts started while trying to keep the gasket in place was a bugger. I wound up losing the new IAC gasket (where'd it go???), so I reused the old one, and added some RTV to it as a back-up. Not my ideal plan, but in a pinch - you do whatever it takes.

Thanks for the advice fellas, I'm off to bed .
