3rd cat delete

It's something you might not think of until the transmission or fuel pump break.

+1, it takes Bill and I both to drop the exhaust on my 93 because it's a single system dual pipe...it's a PITA dropping and hanging it as a complete unit.

I recommend having flanges added for future repairs.

And why would you remove the 3rd/resonator...only to have a single pipe put in.. Stop wasting your time and just do true duals from the start.
 
One of the first thing i did to the car was ditch the 3rd cat and put an x pipe in place of it.

1. Maybe they'll remember, but don't let them try to tell you that 2.5" won't fit. We had to argue about that. Then he tried to tell me that I'd lose all low end torque.

2. It might be a good idea to not have them weld it into a giant, single assemble. A pair of exhaust flanges would make it easier to work on the car in the future without having to drop the entire system.

3. Make sure you get his price in writing first. They promised me one price, then thought differently after the start.

The work was good, their reputation is good, but I don't think they are used to having someone who knows what they want walking in their and holding them to it.

I don't have duals, I have a single 3'' and a y pipe to dual mufflers and tips so it shouldn't be hard to figure out in any place I *hope*. I don't WANT full duals nor can I afford it, what's down there is nice and simple and done with good quality, even Jamie said it was fine. I think I'll try em out and I will get it all in writing. I'm not scared toa rgue with 'em if need be. I really appreciate the first hand knowledge and review. Thanks alot buddy!
 
I want to remove 3rd cat and go to 2 1/4 or 2 1/2. But why is nobody talking about the o2 sensors? are they before the cat? My research has found this can be a problem and give a check engine light. If you all have a way around the light please do tell. Include part names and where to get them please.

so basically ford decided to put a worthless pipe to quiet down these beasts? why can no exhaust shop here understand that there's no o2 sensors hooked up to it so its just a little pipe. meineke over here said its impossible to fit 2.5'' piping, thats what they told my dad. i just think they're lazy and they've never done it before, idk how many mark viii's (out of the 6 i've seen- 3 wrecked) got custom true duals from meineke. when the time comes im probably going to sawzall my exhaust off from the 3rd cat back, bring it somewhere to have an xpipe put in, dual 2.5'' piping and either magnaflow ss mufflers or dynomax race bullets.

Just installed the mandrel bend 2 1/4 kit with x pipe and I love it. Fit great and sounds great with 2 Magnaflows at the rear. The car feels stronger and the smell is gone, hooray ! Thanx Bruce
 
Actuaally I finally found the truth. THERE IS NO 3RD CAT! Its just a resonator. 50 state legal to remove/replace with an X pipe!

Nope. It is indeed a catalytic converter (that's why it stinks like rotten eggs when it gets clogged - so you cut it off and weld in an h-or-x-pipe and all is well). On the base models, with single exhaust there is a small resonator behind the 3rd cat. LSC models with true duals have a dual in/dual out 3rd cat with no resonator.

Here's my H-Pipe in the place of the 3rd cat on my '97 LSC:
