3.9 to 4.6

it would be easier to buy a S-type R or a mustang GT.

Id say rear mount turbo, but all those seem to do is blow these engines up.

If you want a fast 4 door car like this...find you a BMW 540i 6 speed.

hey ghost ls what is your buddies name that builds the wrecks i do the same and im located just down the road from you is Ponca City. I currently have 3 gen 2s I am working on and 1 gen 1 lse, I was also wondering if anybody knew what the differece is on the early 03 transmissions, I bought a repo and when it showed the tranny was in the trunk in a million pieces, was thinking i would buy a parts car to fix it but im not sure what exactly will interchange with it.

Rich Helsel out of Oxford Kansas. I'd have to get you a number i don't have it handy. At least not the shop number.

the Gen1 is a 5R55N transmission (where as the Gen2 is a 5R55S). it was used in several other Fords during the 2001-2002 (Explorer, S-Type, ...etc) I believe the LS used a unique bell housing but the internal where the same.

Strip all the electronics and put in an engine with a carb. That's the cheapest and easiest way to do any swap into a newer car with all the electronics. But you lose almost everything in the car unless you can get the rest of the computers to run somehow. But then again why have an LS if you wanna go fast?

same issue - nothing directly bolts up and the electronics/PCM change is likely simething we cannot do ourselves....

Yeah. I ran the 5R55S in my 2000 LS sport for a while. everthing was the same.

I would expect it to be an extream challange. But if I want an LS with more power, I'm going to need to build one. Ford won't do it for me.
My LS has a salavage title. I bought it for cheap and rebuilt it int my spare time. I'm a mechanic. I need something to do.

Hey quik why couldn't you bring in the 4.6 ecm and just use it for all engine bay items and let all the other computers run the ls

sure - but don't both need to know - speed, rpm, fuel, ....?

That's the way the OLOA LS worked with the Rousch stage 3 in it - ecm for engine, along side ecu for LS. It was hardly a usable combo.

and in most states is not street-legal to put an 'older' engine into a car. it has to be same model year or newer.

sounds like for the money just getting a 4.6 stang would be a wise choice that way you have both luxury-fast and faster-fast

Ya and then youre like every other shmo on the street. I just wanted to take my LS to a new level. If i want to go REALLY fast i will spend the $30,000 and buy the Supra I found with a near 1000 hp setup. Just not on my list of priorities right now. Besides if i buy another car before i buy this new house for us in Texas I might as well plan on living in my car! Don't know if you ever tried to sleep in the back of an LS but personally at 6'2 235 I dont fit very well! LOL
Seriously though there has got to be some other mods out there that can be done. How about headers?

there is already turbos, superchargers and N2O. You absolutely could use a Vortech - unless you have one laying around, not sure what the point is in re-inventing. all the work in fabracating a mounting solution is only a small part of the job.

Ya i get your point Quik, just thought maybe there was something else out there that hadn't been touched yet. So what about headers? I didn't see an answer on that?

yes - there have been attempts at headers - with dissappointing results. There is another thread on a new vendor that claims they have them for sale - $900/set. at that price it would be nearly the worst investment for performance improvement you could make - but if you're going to do everything, might as well do them as well.

Have you seen the LLSOC site? Also for some of the smaller and less challenging modifications, a lot of the Jaguar S-Type brakes and suspenction parts are compatible. But check and dubble check first.

Actually I have slept in my LS and I'm 6'0-6'1" and 208lbs. Only cause that's what I do if I drive alone and go drinking, I sleep it off in my car rather than take a taxi which is only good for group "drunkness" :P

Headers ain't doing so hot...now if I had a friend who knew how to check supers and maintenance if I put together the super that QUIK invented then I'd hit on it but since I am mechanically impaired...guess I have to study up long before installing the super.

To briefly revisit the 4.6 swap discussion, McLaren prototyped two Gen1 cars for Ford. The major change necessary was to re-design the intake manifold so as to clear the hood. A small run of 4.6 manifolds was cast from magnesium with a lower profile so it was unnecessary to cut the hood. Since the work was a feasibility study for space, I doubt that they bothered to hook-up all the bells and whistles. I saw these cars, far along in the necessary fabricating, during some business at McLaren. And please have no doubt that the Ford Engineering folks are capable of completely integrating the electronics. I am, at present working with SCT to determine the limits of their ability to 'bend' the factory stuff to work with slightly different hardware.

Lol i get the feeling sometimes that Quik just wants me to break down and buy the Supercharger kit being offered on LLSOC. Actually it looks pretty good by design. I would have loved to be involved in any of the grunt work it took to get to the point that it's at now. I will probably eventually look into going that route but for now i just thought i would scour the vast ocean of knowledge and possibilties for other option.

nah - believe or not...
the LLSOC is a non-profit so it make little difference if we sell any. There is always risk of people blowing up, dropping screw into motors, ...etc that could end up being a big hassle for me - as I'm likely the tech support for them.

In fact - I'll loose a little of my exclusivity if there are a bunch of SCed LSes running around ;) and 'what if' when one of them puts down more hp them me...

My only point was - why reinvent the wheel - unless you like the 'project' aspect of it - or for some reason have a better solution. There's a turbo setup for sale for $1800 - can't imagine anyone being able to do better than that for the money....

Hmm...is a turbo kit even easier to set up than a supercharger? I've never been into turbos much so I have very little knowledge on them :P

I wouldn't say that, but the one steve is selling has already been installed, and he can tell you all the little things he did.

certainly couldn't build a new kit for that.
