Could that towel in the intake have taken out the catalytic converter on that side? CEL came on yesterday, checked the code and got "catalyst threshold low"?

Yessir it could have.. You've been misfiring..
I'm sure the towel was not way back inside when you bought the engine. It got way back there when it was first started up so, the vacuum pulled it back and into the #3 intake port.
Geez, I'd say someone didn't look very hard at the intake before buttoning everything up.

ahhhh, now i get the recent "towel in the intake" joke ive seen around. some how i must have missed this thread the first time around. good times, good times indeed.
