"Although the 5R55N is similar, only a few parts are interchangeable
and most others can create problems if installed in a W/S unit.
The N unit was used from '99-'02 in Jaguar S with 3.0/4.0 liter, Lincoln
LS and Thunderbird 3.0/3.9 liter. The N was replaced by the S in 2003 in
the Lincolns and T-Birds. The W showed up in Explorers and
Mountaineers for '02-'03 before giving way to the S in '04-'05 models."

I think thats a pretty reliable source, Im gonna confirm this when it stops raining out here. Mustang converter here I come!

Yeah it's the same tranny that's in the s197 Mustang GT. That's why I believe it may be possible to do a manual trans swap on a 2nd gen LS if you could get past the computers.

Well I plan on keeping the auto, stuffing all the clutch hydraulics and everything into the LS's already cramped engine bay doesnt look to fun. I was gonna get the Stainless Works headers but Im aiming more towards a TCI Streetfighter converter now, I think it would easily put me into the 13's. Im cutting 2.2 60's because it bogs so bad off the line. As far as manual swaps Id either contact Kiesler or Mike Skulte.. Mike does alot of Tremec swaps and Kiesler makes 6 speed swaps for the Magnums/Chargers platform along with many others.

Do the GT's shift as crappy a the LS's do? I'd assume not. Does that mean I can get the car to shift like a GT with a tunner?

The few stangs I have driven don't shift that great either. Better then the LS but that's not saying much. There are vendors including some on this site that can provide a tune for use that will have your LS shifting a lot better then a stock stang

Sonnax is an awesome tranny parts company. I live just a few miles from their facility.

the SCT tuners can improve both the shift speed and shift points. The Lincoln was purposely tuned for softer shifts than the Mustang - based on the target audience they were selling to.

and yes - there are performance rebuilds available for the N if you are going to swap parts. We haven't not seen power levels that have broke anything yet....

I was going to get parts from Level Ten when I thought I needed a rebuild
but it turned out one of the CV knuckles failed on an axleshaft after I put Ray's 02 posi pumpkin in.
When I do need a rebuild I'll get some of their stuff
