I bought the car in May 04, now has 50K miles. All of a sudden the engine light comes on, and the car stutters or jolts when accelerating around 50mph. Is this what they call a misfire? Is it one of the ignition coils or a spark plug? I just subscribed to alldata.com. Is this a job I can do myself, or something I need to take to a lincoln mechanic? Please Help!

You can replace both spark plugs and COP (coil on plug) yourself. However, you may have to go to the dealer to have the engine light reset or just unhook the battery for about 30 minutes and let the PCM reset. On Alldata there is a procedure in there on how to replace the plugs and COP's.

isn't there a way to pull codes on these cars?

I wouldn't start to blindly throw parts at a car w/o knowing for sure what the root cause of your problems are

IIRC, AutoZone can pull the codes for you.

like every car since 96 - it has an ODBII port - and Autozone will pull the code for free. Then goto http://www.obdii.com/codes.asp to get the run down.

Ok, so when I go to autozone and get them to run a test, can they tell me then if its a bad coil or plug? so i know what i need to replace specifically?

maybe - if the ODB code can actually tell you that a specific coil is bad. Autozone can only tell you what the generic ODB codes mean, there are a bunch that are unique to Lincoln/Ford - to get those use the link a mentioned above.

If you determine you have a coil going bad, there is probably another root cause of it's failure. Typically, especially on the earlier cars, the cause is related to a leaky valve/cam cover gasket somewhere allowing oil to soak the coil packs.

You can inspect / replace a COP by just removing the smaller, inner cover on each valve/cam cover. One screw and connector and the COP will pull right up. If they are soaked w/ oil, better look into replacing your cover gaskets before you waste money on new COPs. Gasket sets run ~$80 for both sides, and takes ~ 5 hrs for a DIY for the passenger side, ~ 7 hrs for the driver's side. Look forward to an ~$800 bill to have the dealer do it.

If you go to autozone, dont let them fill you full of BS about only being able to pull codes if the check engine light is on. Thats $7 an hr mentality at work.

I ordered the gaskets for my '00 LS8, as I smell oil and have a slight miss every now and then at moderate load. They arrived today! I don't understand how these will stop oil going to the spark plugs (maybe because I haven't torn into it yet) because the gaskets only go around the outside perimeter of the cover, and not the area where the spark plugs would be. I searched for possible seals or gaskets for the plug area, but did not find anything. Am I just missing something in my head, or am I going to have to get some more parts? I ordered my service manual CD off Ebay last week, but have not heard word on it yet.

I do plan on taking pictures of the procedure and puting it on my website. It may be a simple job (or not), but this engine looks so different from what I am used to looking at, it would help me to see it. :)

The gasket kits I used includes (ea) 1 valve cover gasket, 4 plug well rings, and 2 valve cover bolt rings. Part numbers and prices are as follows:

Left Side: XW4Z-6584-BB Gasket Kit - $38.18
Right Side: XW4Z-6584-AB Gasket Kit - $37.91

Total: 76.09 (without tax)

The new gaskets use a different (black) rubber in place of the grey rubber used on the factory gaskets. If your gasket set didn't include the rings for the plug wells, I believe you can buy those seperately.

You are exactly right. Good info. I did not realize that it was a different part number for the kit. When I ordered online, I only got the cover gaskets. I thought I would clean the rest of the seals and re-assemble. WRONG! Back plug was drenched in oil 1 week later, so I did the same job again today, but replaced everything. The dealers in town did not have the plug seals, but had the full kits. It ends up that someone in town is beating me to the dealer by a day or so. He/she has been doing the same repairs as I have. I also put in the Motorcraft Platinum plugs. WOW. I only drove it a couple of miles tonight, but what a difference! I only hope I got everything right now and it holds up. I will check the plugs again in a week to make sure I got a good seal.

Also, I feel the times you post for replacement are very close. Little details like this really help out a newbie to the LS.

Thank you.

thanks for the help

OK guys, luckily I know a mechanic who had all the equipment I needed. As it turned out I had 2 bad plugs. How long are they supposed to last? They looked like the original set of plugs old as dirt..lol. Replaced them and ran a test again, not misfiring anymore.

Another misc question. Does anyone know where I can can get a set of chrome factory rims for other than retail price? I have the 00 LS v8/sport package, with the 17" sport rims, I want a chrome set too. Everywhere I look is over $1000 for rims alone, even ebay.

They pop up on e-bay every now and then - there is only one set one there now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7937593674&category=43957

I believe Ken is selling a set - his handle is GrayGhost1 on this board.

I had a set for sale about a month ago and let them go for $675 with tires. A fellow LLSOC member drove from Charlotte, NC to pick them up. I also included the Chrysler lugs and locking lugs with them. Sorry about the bad timing. There's another LLSOC member selling a set. If you're a member log on and talk to Chris. His handle is sheepsoup.

I also have a 2000 Lincoln LS Sport, the same thing happened to me, I replaced all of the coils, they are expensive from the dealer.

For future reference, Since I am now replacing 2 coils, if it comes down to me replacing the gaskets, is it gonna kill me in labor? I did notice a little bit of oil on 2 of the old plugs when I replaced the plugs. Is that my sign of worse things to come?

Was the oil in the well and on the boot? One of the seals that were bad on mine was obvious. It had a LOT of oil on the boot. A local dealer told me 4-5 hours to replace them. You'll have to call and see what they say. After I replaced the seals and plugs it ran great. A week later, it started to miss upon load and then at idle! I checked everything and no oil. I had a new coil, so I started swapping, and on my third guess, it started running fine. Hopefully I found the bad coil. My point is, even after replacing everything, you may find that you still have another problem that you will have to troubleshoot or take back to the dealer. This is why I like to get to know my cars and do the work myself.

On the drivers side of my car, I see some remains of oil in a couple of plug wells(dry). It didn't look bad and my boots were dry, so I didn't go ahead with the replacement of seals there yet. I think someone already worked that side. You'll just have to make the call based on what you see. If you have true wet oil, I would do them.

It was oil on the end of the boot, not drenched, but enough to make me think there was a leak. But those 2 cylinders were not the ones that were misfiring. I checked again and no oil this time. But the cylinders that were misfiring were on the driver side, #6 & #8. Both dry, so maybe just a bad COP?

I would go with that. The coil that was bad on mine was dry also. Just a design flaw of the coil packs, probably. We all would like to find a reason that they go bad, but sometimes it just happens.

Coil Replacement

I had the dealer do mine. (5 different times) Most of the cost is the parts whihc have to be purchased from the dealer. $300 a pop. FYI, they go becasue of moisture getting in through the seals around the units. The dealer finally noticed after the 5th one and replaced all the seals. Not a problem since.
