To start off with -- 2000 LS aprox 135k miles.

Started with an occasional stumble going up hills, and then one evening I started it and it was running rough. Checked codes and had a P0307 - Cylinder 7 Misfire. Figured it was a coil gone bad, so went, bought a new coil and replaced.

To my misfortune, the car continued running rough, with the same code reapparing. I checked the spark plugs, and tested it out, and it was firing, fuel injectors appeared to be working. Also checked compression, was normal also.

After playing around, I noticed that you could completely unplug cyls 5-8 and the engine would run (actually pretty smooth). I tried unplugging cyls 1-4 (and just leaving on 5-8) and the engine would barely run if at all. It appears that if you unplug any cylinder 1-4 you can definatly tell there is no cylunder firing, but if you unplug any of cyls 5-8 you can barely if at all tell. Almost as if the entire side is not running or minimally running.

Took it too the dealer, and they believe (as I do as well) that its internal to the engine, but they are saying it will cost at a minumum 3000. They are assuming its a timing chain or tensioner, if its not they are talking about new engine, quoting me at upwards of $7000 to replace. Ouch.

Anyone had a similar problem, and know what it could be. Has anyone chained the timing chains? It looks to be a fairly involved process by the looks of it.

my engine kept shaking even after i replaced the coil and plug. it turned out it was the harness that connects the the coil. it had a broken clip. i taped it and haven't had problems since

I'd say change all of your spark plugs and COPs. Then see if that problem still continues. I wouldn't let the stealership touch my car. Try that first and if that doesn't work, then hey...

compression/leak down test before you do an engine replacement.

remember - the actual mis-fire could have been on any cylinder - is it often simply an indicator that there is a mis-fire not very accurate on which cylinder it is in....

RE: Replacing plugs/coils -- coils are relatively new (replaced within the last year), spark plugs were replaced last summer. What I can't figure out is, is why one side runs strong, and the other does not. I have swapped all coils from one side to the other, as well as spark plugs, and the same symptons persist.

Compression is good, the other item to note is that there is a distinctive knocking like the timing chain (or something) is slapping against something but its a very distinct pattern.
