v8 with 73k miles. Why does my car hesitate as if the transmission is slipping when just tring to speed up while cruising. I can be cruising at 55mph and give it some gas, but not enough to downshift, it then begins to hesitate and its enough to where my fiancee in the passenger seat was asking me what that is?!?!?!. If I am very easy on the gas with it then it will not hesitate but Ive almost got it down to a science as to just how much gas i need to give it without it downshifting that it will unfortunately begin to feel like a transmission slip. I thought maybe fuel injectors, fuel filter etc dealing with fuel delivery but I believe thats just wishful thinking. Anybody???
I can mash the gas down from a stop position and nothing. Smooooooth shifting without any drag or hesitation. If I'm cruising down the freeway and mash it...nothing but smooth down shifting and smooth acceleration.

dude you should probably search for your problems on the forum first... Every thread you have made are pretty common problems and can be found in the archives that is this forum.

You have one or more coils misfiring. Replace all 8.

Yea, the search function is great. Sometimes it takes some time to read through it all but you learn a lot in the process.

It does sound like coils are going bad though. Could be water down where the spark plugs are. The plugs could also be bad.

Yeah, sounds like a coil. Since it doesn't down shift, it's using the higher, heavier to pull than downshifting, and since it's harder to pull it can't give you a smooth pull with a coil on it's way out. If all 8 coils were good you prob wouldn't notice it.Same thing would happen on mine.

Check this thread out. Some useful info on the ls and some common problems

remedy: replace all coils and start diagnosis over

Getting quotes now for all 8. Thanks for the info. BTW I read on another thread that a 2003 had a recall on the COP Wells, any luck that the 2005 would as well? I saw a TSB but couldnt locate a recall.

I believe there is a warranty in effect for LSs from '03-'06 in regard to faulty coils, if that is what you're talking about. I think if your car falls within a certain mileage range, then Ford will replace them.

There is a pdf about it floating around this forum.

It's for 2003 to 2005 and V8 only.
They're covered for up to 100K miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

2003 are covered for valve cover gasket leaks and water leaks as well.

2004 & 2005 are not covered for valve cover leaks.

Here's the letter again...

Thanks for PDF. Have it in hand on the way to drop my car off tomorrow at the dealership.

The keywords in my case in order to be considered "drivability issues" for repairs under this warranty extention will be "Surge or hesitation on acceleration" and the occasional "rough running engine." I have yet to see the "illumination of the check engine light" which the service rep on the phone asked me if I saw it. After I mentioned that I havent seen the light he was skeptical as if it may not be a misfire, therefore not covered.

Diagnostics code please dont fail me now!!!!

The light wont come on until the coil is almost useless. You would think the CEL would come on as soon as a slight misfire is felt from the coil but nope.

Dropped off at the dealership this morning and i'm misfiring on 1 and 6. Fully covered repairs/maint. and to top it all off, an incredible ford focus loaner car for the night...

Thanks again for the info everybody!!!

2005 Lincoln LS Sport with 73k miles.

1 and 6 misfire but they still replaced all 8 coils/plugs under the exteneded warranty. Condensation was corroding the other coils which would have eventaully led to more misfires. Car runs so much more smoother and quicker. amazing how much better the performance is.

Fudge cakes! How long can one drive with coils shot.! Just asking cause mine just took a dump 95 each from ford or 103 from ebay for all 6!!! lol

You can get the newest Ford coils for much less than that from Maxx. (ad to the right)

I know, the previous owner did that I had to overhaul my whole exhaust system with high flow cats and I don't want to ruin these one also. Arg, once I get the code ran can i just swap out the one? I know ppl have done this before. I did a coil replacement about a year and 4 months ago.

No answer to that.. if you go too long, your cats will be shot

Each misfire does damage to the Cats. The question is how much damage can they handle before they become a problem too.

Thanks guys ! I'm going to have to let the baby sit then..Just wondering should I swap them all out or get the code read and swap that one until all 6 arrive..? I swapped them all out 1 year 1/2 ago with spark plugs
