Hey guys. So I bought a 2001 lincoln LS V8 on Saturday. Got an awesome deal on it, but it obviously has lead a rough life until it got into my hands. A few of the problems are:

The interior is really dirty and owner was a smoker.

The center area of the dash is in rough shape, has a really cheap alpine aftermarket head unit, wiring was hacked instead of factory harness adapter, and the bezel around the center vents is gone. Also had misc bolts missing when taking apart the center console and radio area.

Front windows didn't work. Found out that regulartors were bad and the owner zip tied the bracket on the glass to the top of the regulators! Seriously, regulators are about $60 a piece.

Car looks like it hasn't been washed in years

Heat doesn't work

Inside driver door handle is busted

The good is that the engine runs smoothly, transmission is good, a/c works, and there's no major dents or paint problems. Im also a pretty good detailer and pretty sure i can bring the paint and wheels back to life. I can take a car that looks like this

And make it look like this

I've already taken care of the window problems. I just bought a factory 6 disc radio with climate controls on eBay. About to buy an ashtray setup from a member here. And I'm about to order a new handle and center vent bezel.

Here's some pics of what she looks like now.

You can see I made a half ass attemp at polishing the one headlight just to see if I needed to sand em.

Here's an idea of how dirty this is

Here's the hacked radio harness. I don't understand why people just don't spend the $10 for an adapter harness. Soooo much easier!

And here's a couple shots of the great zip tie job

I'll get some better pics once I start the detailing process. Sadly, the whole purpose of this purchase was to flip the car, but I might change mind after driving it around for a bit :) .

...Heat doesn't work...

Given the other things you have found, you may find that the heater hoses have been internally plugged so that they didn't have to replace the DCCV when it failed. (They usually fail in the full heat all the time position.)

Thank you. I did find a thread on here that gives a nice checklist of things to go through when there's no heat. When I get a chance I'll look at the hoses.

Well drove around for a bit with heater on and felt the heater hoses and they felt warm and "empty". Popped off one of the hoses and it was dry. No signs of any plugs in the hose or in the firewall nipple. However after I reattached it and let t idle for a few minutes a radiator hose blew off and I lost all coolant. Car wasn't overheating according to temp gauge on inside of car. I did find the previous owner switched to a worm gear clamp on the hose and it seems it wasn't tight on there at all. I tightened her up and went to fill with coolant and bleed it this morning and noticed what might be a small crack on the degas bottle.

It's in the section above the fill lines. I can feel it with my fingernail on the outside of the tank. The thing looks brand new compared to other parts of the car, but I'm not going to take a chance. I'll order a new one and the refill it. In the mean time I'm going to check under the car on the dccv to see it it was plugged down there.

Yeah, it's done, it won't allow for the system to pressurize and thereby not getting into the heater core for interior heat.
It will have a few cracks on the back side against the firewall like everyone elses Degas bottle.

Do not buy the Dorman bottle, too many reports of cap not sealing correctly.

You'd be well advised to replace more cooling system parts at this time.

Urrgghhh. Just literally picked up the doorman bottle from advance auto parts. Shoulda checked the forums before ordering it, lol. Well it was only $64.99 so I'll give it a shot. It's not all that hard to replace if it fails. I'll just take it back and order OE, thank you for the warning.

Other cooling system parts look good. Is there anything else that is prone to failing that I should check out? Car has 148,000 miles.

Looks like you got your work cut out for you.

I do a little detailing on the side too. Here's a couple threads of mine:

Good work! I got a photobucket album of some of the cars I've done. I've been a meguiars man though. Used to use their 80 and 83 combo with LC pads. But I've been using the 105 and 205 compounds/polishes since they came out with them. And I see you're a black fire sealant man as well :). Used to use zaino as well, I think it lasts a little longer than blackfire, but I can't tell a difference in gloss/depth.

Well, new cooling system parts are on the way, lol. Sure enough I put the new tank in, bled the system, and still wasn't getting really hot heat. Looked back under the hood and saw coolant in the allen head indentation in the filler cap. Blew it out with my air hose and saw a nice little crack and bubbling coming from the crack.

So, went to the Ford dealership and got a new cap. Went to take off the filler cap and ended up breaking the filler neck off, lol. Was using channel lock pliers because the allen head hold was stripped and my 10mm allen head was just spinning. Either way, I ordered the whole aluminum setup for a Jaguar. And, I also ordered the plastic crossover in front of it, part number 8A520 I believe. So I'm just on standby until those parts come in.

Also got the radio, harness, and doorhandle in the mail before the weekend. Radio is in and working, but the door handle suffered from the same problem I had, the little plastic piece breaking off and not catching the cable. Good thing is I bought it off a salvage yard off ebay and they have a good return policy.

Its refreshing to hear someone take a positive attitude to bringing a LS back to life. I like reading your repairs as you have the understanding that to get it back will take time and effort and your not down on the car because of issues. I'm sure in the end the car will no longer be a flip car, once the known issues have been adressed it'll give you years of pleasure! I still love going in to the garage and just staring at my car!

Keep up the posts.

Thanks for the links. I do have a set of those wrenches as well (plus a nice assortment of other tools I've gathered over the years :) ). I was just planning on picking up a thermostat from the autoparts store before starting the replacement. Won't get the housing until Friday so it looks like a weekend project.

So, change out he thermostat housing. It's a little project, but wasn't too bad. But now I know the guy was plagued with it running hot and didn't know what to do. He was an old school car guy (had a tri 5 in his garage he was working on as a project) so probably wasn't too keen on how sensitive these cars are to cooling pressure or how to look up the problem online. When I opened up the thermostat house I found this.

He gutted the thermostat probably thinking it was the problem. So I replaced the crossover tube, degas tank, thermostat housing, and changed out all the hose clamps.

Either way, car runs cooler and the heat is working! Now onto cleaning this thing up and putting the interior back together.

So it's been awhile since an update. Car is running well. Had a little bit of a rough idle, and seeing the problem with coils, I just went ahead and did plugs and coils for all cylinders. Good news was that there was no oil problems on the plugs, but a few were rusty. But she runs really well now. Got around to polishing out the headlights and giving her a bath.

Discovered it will need a clock spring as well. I did put her up for sale yesterday. Asking $3800. Still a couple problems and need rear tires so I went a little low on asking price. I'll raise the price if it doesn't sell and I fix/detail it some more.

Maybe hit the bottom black plastics with some Back-to-Black from Mothers' or mask and shoot.

+1 Looks good all around, nice clean up.

GL w/ sale.
