I would agree. The sticker on top of the module that says "Scrap if dropped" gives the impression that the unit is slightly tempermental. Ebay has lots of them for less than $25

I have done this, however it is very difficult to pop out the buttons without breaking the tabs. Each button has it's own set of tabs I removed about four of them before deciding it wasn't worth the risk.
