So, much excitement going on here. I am finally painting my door. SO far I just have it scuffed and will be priming once the weather isn't so cold and humid.

so far this is what I have

Well scuffed the door for primer and got all the trim off in the painted area, the rest will be masked off. I also bought another gun today from summit, my other is more for primer with a bigger needle. I used a hairdryer to take of the pinstripe, which worked well. I will post more pics and steps as I go along.

I love the fact that you are doing it yourself. Definitely keep this thread alive with updates.

VERY hard to match. You have to use the right color base coat primier to get the color to match. Had to shot my lip spoiler twice. Used the wrong primier the first time. It had more of a redish tint to it.
 
Before you paint the door. Remove the trim. Its very easy. Pull the window seal trim down and out. Few small black phillips head screws to remove.

what primer did you use?

and I am going to pull the trim, I thought about just masking it off but I will take it off.
 
Well, I have almost a gallon of grey primer left from another project I wonder if I use a black sealer over the gray primer if it will be okay.

Thank you for the tip as well, the less paint and time wasted the better

I suggest get black primier. If the black sealer doesn't work, your door will not match. Then you just wasted your time and money in supplies. What you spend on black primeir will save you in Autumn Red paint, $81 a pint.:eek:

Where did you get your paint from the dealer?
 
Why are you primering the door? Good paint is a perfectly suitable paint substrate after sanding with 600 grit wet. Some guys love sealer, but I see no benefit using it. No matter what you do, the paint will probably not match perfectly, that is why bodyshops blend paint. Also that belt molding should be removed. It's usually an easy job, but I'm not sure how hard it is on a LS.

Becuase the Autumn Red, paint code "GT", has pearl in it. Using grey primier is a garrantee it will NOT match. Grey primier will give it more of a redish tint. On a large surface like the door, it will stick out like a sore thumb. By using the black primier, he will have a better chance of it matching or at least being a closer match. And less noticeable to someone that dosen't know it was painted.
 
Gus, trust me I have a couple years of resto work under my belt I know how to do this. I know it should be blended but this is not a show car I don't honestly care as long as its not 100% obvious I painted it. I just want door that isn't :q:q:q:qed up on it. Besides that you should always prime paint will bond better to primer than scuffed clear any day, it's chemically designed to if it wasn't no one would use primer
