i get out of the hospital today, driving along, check temp light comes on. i stop, water check,no leaks check, but no fan on. when the car is hot, even when you shut it off, shouldn't the fan stay on until temp drops? i search for the fuse in the owners manual, not one spot in two fuse boxes that says fan anything i read cover to cover. in the engine compartment theres a 10 amp fuse that says temp. im asssuming its the sending unit. the fuse is good, butputting a test light on the contacts results in no power. every other fuse has power to both sides, this one, nothing. does anybody know how the fan system works, and what should i look for. no matter what, there should be power to that fuse, maybe a wire came loose on back. this may be why the other motor toasted. cant do this again.going to jump fan tomorrow to make sure it works.

the fan won't stay on in a first gen at least.
you might have a dead vcrm/vrcm or whatever its called.

no matter what, the 10 amp temp fuse should have power. what exacly does it do? it was dark willbe checking all connections i can tomorrow

Does your AC work? With the AC on the fan will turn on also. My AC compressor quit working in the middle of the desert, then car over heated. Turned out it was one of the 40A fuses under the hood. Forget the number though.

I think the vlcm went bad. The fastest way to tell is to put the A/C on. If the fan and the A/C clutch dont energize, it's probably the vlcm. I have one if you need to check it. I probably live 30 minutes from you at the most. I may be able to come down after work.

I had this problem this summer as well. Temp went up and check temp displayed, thank god I was already pulled over being where I was. Anyway shut car off and popped the hood and reached in to check the fan, fan was siezed. replaced the fan and replaced the 60 amp fuse for the VCLM in the underhood fuse box.

Check the fan and then check the 60 amp fuses in the box. Either a burnt fan or a burnt VCLM.

after i check the fuses and fan, will pm you or pm me your # thanks, checked all fuses yesterday, only bad one was temp 10a under hood

sometimes makes me think more like a bad fan plug.
and somebody on this board has one for sale i'm sure.

VCRM bud.... best place to look is junkyards... i don't know how the scene is in florida, but unlesss you wanna drop 350 for one from ford Scrap is your best friend

agreed, and yes I have one for sale. just to be safe i will sell you the vcrm/vlcm and the plug with plenty of wire for splicing. $75.

my 93 did the same thing. test the fan first with 12v jumped straight from the battery. if the fan kicks then I have what you need (vcrm/wire lead and connector). if it doesn't, I have what you need (a fan). the car I am parting is a 98. I have the flu right now but can pull this over the weekend and ship on Monday.

fan works.ac works. around town no problem, as soon as i get on throttle or highway, there goes temp.got off the highway, stall.when i turnn key on shouldnt the fan come on to cool motor? i turned key on, then a/c fan blowing inside,no outside.all fuses check out.mygreat8 thinks plug and or vlcm. dealer no have. these guys have some though.

just making sure we are talking about the same fan. not the fan that blows the air out of the vents. when you turn your ac on max ac the fan on the radiator kicks on right?. the radiator fan that is?

if not it is
1 the fan itself
2 the harness
or 3 the vlcm/vcrm

you can not get 2 or 3 from the dealer. it is a junk yard item only. and the fan I think you can only get the motor not the entire assembly. much easier to replace the entire unit.

in order to isolate the problem you need to, disconnect the fan from harness, cut 2 jump wires about 5 to 6 ft long, run the wires from your battery to the fan motor. if the motor doesn't kick on then it is the fan. on the first gen the fan has a little + and - on the motor where the connector clicks in place. it helps to have a couple gator clips for your jumper wires. remember - to - or black, and then + to + or red. if it kicks on then it is the vcrm/vlcm or the connector.

if the fan is kicking on when wired to the battery and not to the harness. wiggle the harness around sometimes this fixes it.

if the wiggle trick works then it is the connector.

if not then you need a volt meter. with the a/c on max a/c, if you are receiving 12v when the fan is not plugged in but the moment you plug it in it drops to 0v, then it is a bad connector that is causing to much resistance and the vlcm (variable load control module) is sensing the added load and shutting the fan off to avoid fire and damage.

if you get nothing when testing before the connector at all times (plugged and unplugged) then it is the vlcm.

if you are getting 12v before the connector and not at the pins it is the connector.

I only know this from experience i bought a fan and 2 vlcms before realizing what was going on. my connector was bad.

I am not a typist, so if this doesn't make sense, pm me and I will drop you my # and walk you through it.

hooked up my sniper today to see if i could override the fan controls. i set the low temp on at 160, and hi temp hi speed at 185 deg. with the car on it idled to what my "dummy" gauge in car at halfway. according to dyno tune program it was at 200 deg. fan was on low.i turn a/c on instantly high speed comes on, temp stays the same. car did not overheat but also did not go anywhere just idle.

i need someone to ride with me with laptop on their lap to tune with me while driving.i just figured out how to do this.AND i have the ability to write another program for someone else as well. rich, if yor out there call me, or ultimate.

had the fan working or so i thought. drove around for an hour, notemp problem, then i hear valve chatter, temp gauge not showing hot, then, nothing. dead. started after an hour running real rough.

well... that sounds like the end of that, sorry bro
