For the last couple hours I have been reading up on CAI. It's one of the easiest/fairly cheap mods to do.

Threads read - "Intake Advice" "$75 Ebay Air Intake" "CAI set up" "Make your own CAI"

Post #9 in "CAI set up" is what I was thinking about doing before even reading that thread. If you've read that thread before, you'd know the debate of having a tube running from the bottom grille to under the air filter housing. I honestly don't see the problem as the water/debris wouldn't travel up the hose that far to reach the filter.

My question is this. Has anyone tried these (AutoZone)

I think it looks cool, but I'm pondering bending my own custom pipes or getting this and just wanted to get some thoughts.

Also, does anyone have this heat shield? If so would it be possible to get a laid out diagram of it or do you know where to buy it separately? If I had a diagram I think it would be easier to go off of when doing a stainless steel heat shield.

I made my first heat shield for $10 out of some galvanized sheetmetal from home depot. I made my latest heat shield out of stainless steel from work for free. Here is pic of the pattern I used. These measurements are for a 1st gen LS. Not sure if you have the 1st or 2nd gen.

Nice work ! thanks for posting the mesurement pic, just curious did you notice any diffrence at all after doing this?
 
Intake Tract and Exhaust Modifications

FWIW, I did both the KKM aluminium duct and filter, and the Magnaflow cat-back system on my '02 while going to Maxton for the first couple of trips toward running ECTA E/F CC. Doing the alterations made NO DIFFERENCE in one mile times. If you were to do significant 'hop-up' to the engine you might see some improvement. The difference in sound is excellent, however!

I agree with Cammerfe, no real performance gain but sounds and looks great. There may be a slight horsepower increase but not significant. The throttle response is slightly better IMO and the gas mileage may be a slight bit better.
 
seeing as were on the topic of CAI, i was curious about that aluminum/stainless steel tube for gen1's that was for sale on LSkoncepts and ive seen em onine at various other places b4, is there really any gain?
or would i be just as well of removing that "silencer" that is slapped on the very front of the tube above the radiator. I still have mine , but when my buddie bought his 05, i noticed someone had removed the xtra portion and sealed up the holes that it left >_< and i was always curious why this was done to it.....

i think i remember reading here a long time ago that someone said it will make ur car a little louder and slightly more responsive on the throttle???

Any thoughts?

I plan on picking up a nice K&N filter here one day and doing that airbox mod...saving the pic of ur dimensions right now for future reference.(thanks!!!)
Ill prolly do that airduct down to the lower grill too as i have to agree,,,thats alot of distance for debri/water to travel and i dont think it will harm it and i want to be sure my baby gets all the air she need!!

Only if you drive mostly at wide-open throttle would it even be possible for an increase in gas mileage due to a less restrictive intake. Even then, it would likely be so small as to be unmeasurable. At less than WOT, the throttle is more of a restriction than the filter. If you removed the filter restriction, the throttle would just close a little more to get the same power level. Pumping loses would remain the same.

Agreed....by slight bit I meant a tenth of a MPG or less. But with the better sound the CAI provides, who can keep their foot out of the throttle? :D
 
sounds good. thanks guys. i doubt ill be removing that silence unless i actually go and install the polished aluminum air intake tube thingy...
 
The gains are debatable, but you can't say you gain more noise from the engine when you get on the throttle, more noise for the better!
 
I have posted this before but, I used to have a fox body 5.0 Mustang and subscribed to 5.0 magazine. They did a whole lot of mods. on a 5.0 with before and after dyno numbers. I beleive a K&N intake was worth worth about 5 hp. Just for the heck of it they did a before and after with synthetic oil, Mobil 1 probably because there weren't very many at the time. Anyway, the car gained 5 hp just by switching to 100% synthetic oil. That is all my wife, '05 LS8 Sport and I, '06, have used since.

I think he meant his wife has an 05 v8 ls, or 05ls8, but that just happens to be 05 ls8's screen name. :lol:
