Got around to changing the alternator and man that was the worst alternator job I've ever had. The top bolt was a complete PITA and then the alternator wouldn't come out lol. Ended up putting one end of a bar on the pulley and hitting the other end with a hammer. That and a lot of shaking got it loose. Changed the swaybar links and oil since car was in the air. No more loud noises from the front at least.

Thanks to rainjacks and Quikls, all info I needed was found here

Awesome. I am dreading this job when it comes. Or I get impatient enough to just go ahead and put in a HO alt early.

I hate the alt position...why cant it be right up top like on a chevy 350.

I definately feel you pain. I have done mine twice... Worst car that I have every had to change an alternator in by far. Especially in a rear drive car.

I did mine a few months ago. what a p.i.t.a. one thing that i did find was that if you filed down the new alt before you put it in it slides in much easier. next time Im gonna find someone that has a lift that I can use.

I did that so it would go back in easier, worked out awesome

Didn't think about filing the top, good idea especially since the top bolt goes all the way through. Actually the new one went in pretty easy. I figured since the old alternator was in there for 9 years it did not want to leave.

FYI for anyone else doing an alternator replacement....the following picture shows the proper position to remove and replace it without any filing. If you position it like this it will come out fairly easy.

that is not the problem area its the part the bolt goes through to hold it in place at the top.

Actually we were talking about how snug the alternator fits at the top. I rolled my alternator out sideways. I slid the bottom hole out first then rolled it out with the top hole coming out last. Then when I put the new one in I put the top bracket in and rolled the rest with the bottom holes going in last. I tried turning it that way but I couldn't make it work.

Great my alternator just went out again. I just had surgery a few weeks ago and cant change it myself. The Lincoln shure knows when to break. Alternator #4 incomming.....

May I ask what brand of alternator do you have in there and how long did it take the other 2 to burn out?

I bought NAPA best reman alternator. I wanted new but at the time they were on back order. The warranty is lifetime I think, but I have not beeen happy.

Similar fates have been reported by numerous LS owners that chose to use a non-Motorcraft alternator.

170,000 miles on my OE '03 LS8 alternator. Is it on borrowed time?

Since you've gone that far I wouldn't worry about it all. Just never speak of it again. Otherwise the Alternator killer will hear you and come kill your alternator.
