I wonder if a push over type tire pressure gauge wouldn't work well enough to check for pressure. It'd probably be worth a try.

The refrigerant fitting is larger than a typical schrader valve, so it will not work.

I have one tire gauge with a wide mouth that might work. Maybe he will too. If not, I think the next easiest think to do would be to use an ohm meter to check continuity across the low side pressure switch.
