Battery Options

Green96 did a post that pointed out some LS Battery options from local BatteriesPlus locations. Since I was in need of a new one I went down to check them out. I wanted to stick with a vented OEM style replacement.

As Green pointed out they have a 650 CCA one for around $80 and a 750 CCA for $95 (both Rayovac). I confirmed both are vented in the OEM location and similar dimensions.

The sales guy then did a perfect up-sell and told me about their new AGM battery that is supposedly developed from the group that started Odyssey.
The battery is not even listed in the catalog yet (GRP 65 AGM Dual X2 Auto -Part #SLI65AGMDP) and is comparable in spec's to the Odyssey 65-PC1750T.

It's a sweet battery with 930CCA's, OEM type Venting, 5 yr warranty, and a perfect fit in my 2006 LS battery cradle. This thing has so much juice it feels like my starter is going to spin off it's mounts It also has a Dual Zone setup so you can run your battery down using Accessory's and still have a fully charged zone to start your car.

The only down side is it's pricey at $239 installed but still less than the best price I could find on an Odyssey @ $286 which does not have OEM type vents. Crazy $$ but I figure it will be the last Battery the LS will get under my ownership...

That sounds like an awesome battery. How much is it without the install fee? You can pic up a 850CCA at Oreilly's for $120, but it doesn't have the fancy stuff the 930CCA does.

Installation is included along with the warranty but I think you can haggle with the BatteriesPlus staff/owner. I just stepped up and paid because I liked the kid who was trying hard to be a good salesperson, knowledgeable, and working his way through school. Another thing that may impact pricing is things in California that are considered "environmentally toxic", like batteries, tend to be more expensive due to State fees and regulations. I doubt you could get it for under $200 since I shopped for an Odyssey and could not find anything below the $280's.

It's essentially a copy of the Odyssey 65-PC1750 930CCA 74Ah

I looked at that battery as well. I read on a few other sites how Sears used Odyssey for the Platinum Series and that it’s a good way to go on the value side for what appears to be a very similar item. No OEM Type vent on it though, correct?

No there is not. It is a completely sealed unit with no vents

We all know batteries can be dangerous. That's why standard batteries need vented in our trunks. They store a tremendous amount of energy, create explosive gas during charge and discharge, and contain dangerous chemicals. Some designs and construction techniques are safer than others are. Both Gel and AGM are sealed batteries that use recombinant gas technology. AGM is more efficient in the process and completes its gas recombination near the plates.

Also AGM batteries standards have had to pass rigid military specification for non-gassing even during severe overcharge

I've heard nothing but good things about Odyssey. They are what Optimas used to be before they started cutting quality to increase profits.

I haven't had to replace any batteries in my vehicles for about 3 years, so I'm going to start being due. I will go with Odyssey batteries.

I read all the new optimas are made in Mexico not like the older high quality USA made ones. Will not buy optimas.
