My wife drives a 1993 SC400 and we're getting ready to sell it b/c we need a truck of some kind.

So I'm giving it the once over and my friend and I determine that, meh, it wouldn't hurt to replace both LCAs/ball joints. The bushings are getting a little worn etc.

Bear in mind that both my Mark VIII LCA+BJ assemblies cost less than $150 total.

Just ONE LCA for the SC400 is $650!

And just the bushings are $120 each!

What. The. Hell.

I mean, yeah, they're a little nicer looking but jeez...

So, she's out of luck. :D Gonna sell it as is.

So when you think of your Mark nickle-diming you to death, just remember...it could be a Japanese car Kruggeranding you to death.

Good grief! I never owned a Lexus and am glad now! My BMW, Benz, Audi and Porsche were not outrageous like that.

i really like the 400's..Little to small for me though...Coming from a caprice and marquis....

The parts may be expensive,..But, how long do they last?
Given the fact that her car is the same age as mine, and the Lexus' ball joints are going bad about the same time as mine - it's not worth 10x the cost.

On the other hand, we've had to sink less than $500 overall into her car since we bought it 5 years ago, and I've put thousands into my Mark.

My grandmother had a LS400, when her water pump went at 270,000 miles, she was quoted 1500 from the lexus dealer, she traded it in that day. I wonder if they ever fixed it. I know they are expensive to fix but they hardly ever breakdown. If I could ever afford a Lexus, I would buy one.

I've had Marks over the past 20 years and about 10 years ago I considered a SC 400 but after a couple test drives went back to looking for another Mark.

Since I drive them both, I can tell you that the Mark is much more comfortable and spacious, with more elbow room up front. The Lexus' passenger firewall is very short, causing me to have to bend my knees (I'm 5' 11")even with the seat scooted all the way back, which is uncomfortable on long trips. The SC400's ride is stiffer and the engine is far more responsive (we're talking stock here). They both have a V8 but I'd rather have the stock Lexus V8 based on the way it drives. It has effortless power and zip. The Mark has a noticeably tighter turning radius even though it's longer.

I owned a 98 LS 400 for 3 years. Nothing ever went wrong with it. I loved it. 4.0 290 HP VVTi and 5 speed. Car was very quick.

Control arms do cost a bit more. But considering you only have to change them once every 100k. I think its not bad.

I owned a S500 95 too...that was a money pit and parts where very expensive.

Overall, Lexus is a great company, very reliable.
My next car will be GS430 or LS460.LS430. Its a car I never have to worry about, it will last for a very long time, even after I pay it off.

Krugerrands are from South Africa.

It does help to drive an American car when it is time for the repair bill. The LS may be more on the high dollar end of them but at least it isn't a Lexus.
