I had a '68 Galaxie 2-door. Hardtop with either a 289 or 302. First Ford owned, was a great car other than the ass end sagging almost to the ground, wasn't very fast, but decent on gas and ran great.

loud yes.....powerful...no.
Not by my estimate.
It was slow when it was made.
Don't get me wrong, they are neat cars.
But that old FE stuff is just out dated.
I thought they were slow with a 390.
It will sit and burn rubber all day....but not go anywhere.
Jesus I don't know were you would even find a decent set of headers.
They wont help much anyway.
A carburetor/intake wont help much without a cam.
The car is sitting at 250 hp@ almost 4,000 pounds, do the math.
You would be lucky to squeeze out another 25 hp.
If you like the car go for it, without major upgrades it will never be fast.
If I wanted to make it sleep, I would get a set of 390 front springs, hunt up a 385 series motor with a c6 and swap it.
Then you would have a street stomper.
The weird part is, the front end is definitely 67, but from the front doors to the rear it's a 66. Reminds me of the Johny Cash song about the Cadillac.
Wait a minute---
I have a .040 over 390, a '64 PI engine that's dyno'ed at 500+ HP. The factory rated it at 330 HP. Other versions of the 390 came from the factory rated at over 400 HP.
The FE engine is now available built from all new aftermarket parts and is no more expensive to build than the 385 series. The 385 series can be made larger, but it's also about 150 pounds heavier and physically larger. And the SOHC version of the FE has more power potential than any other engine in the Ford lineup.

The bumper, I think, is from a '67, but the fenders, hood, and grille all look like my '66. Well, except for the fact that my grille isn't mashed up like that one...The front end is not even a '67. They were completely re-designed in '67, with a new hood, grill, bumper, and fenders. Completely...
my desire is to beat a mustang svt cobra

The quote was talking about the 352 that is in this tank.
Also the weak 390 produced for that car.
As far as the 385 series vs the FE
Good luck finding a SHOC... or a side oiler for that matter.
That is what makes a FE expensive to build....finding one.
FE stands for fu@kin extinct.
