Hey guys. I recently acquired a 1993 Mark VIII. It is a clean pearl/white driven by and elderly man, being so, it is in very nice condition. I removed the air silencer where the bumper is and the one on top of the intake. I also plane to remove the back 2 cats.

There are a few issues I need help with, though.

The A/C-heat. The a/c blows very cold, but only out of the defrost and the floor. It will very slightly come out of the vent, but not really.

When I start it up cold, the idle will go down to 400-600 and the car will vibrate and whatnot. There is a hissing sound coming from near the upper intake. I am thinking about putting in new spark plugs, new wires and MSD coil packs. Anyone have experience with these?

Also, do all Gen 1's have a hard shift from 1-2? The past 2 mark Viii's I have had do this.

Also, when I turn the steering wheel while running, it squeaks very loud and is stiff to turn. The pump has plenty of fluid and no lines are leaking.

If someone could point me in a direction with these issues that would be great. I am constantly using the search option, but starting a new thread will also help. Also, what are know issues I should look for on this car?

Thanks.

idle problem is prob a vaccum leak or iac valve

The hard shifting is more then likely the accum spring.

Try changing the ps fluid..You can do this by repeatidly taking fluid out with a baster or other divice. During each change move the steering wheel back and forth to get it moving around.
Is the align ok? check the tires for odd wearing patterns

The squeaking is most likely the ball joints. These cars are prone to go thru bjs quickly. The harsh shifting is as caprice mentioned, your 1-2 accumulator spring is probably broken, another common m8 issue. It is not bad to DIY.

Forgot he said that about the sqeaking..But yea, bj's

I suppose I will clean the IAC and what not to help the idle.

So this requires a tear-down?

Let me reiterate what I meant on the steering. It is not so much a squeak, but rather bushing sounds or something. It is really loud and obnoxious when turning the wheel. The tie rods are good as are the lower ball joints. I know the upper ball joint/a-arms need replace, but this is something different.

Thanks for the reply!

Are you speaking of uppers or lowers? My other car had bad uppers but just clunked.

does it make that noise going over bumps like a old barn door type of sound? Creaking?

Re-check that noise that you hear in back of the intake..If cleaning the iac works then good..If not get a new one.. If that doesnt work i'd return it, put the old one back on and again check to see if its a vac leak.

I believe you just have to drop the pan for the springs

No, not that kind of creaking. Like a full on loudass noise. It is when I am turning the wheel. Also, when I turn the car off and the suspension goes down, it creaks all the way down. Same for turning it on.

I will check it. Thanks.

Okay. I am looking for write-ups on that. Any you can recommend?

i'm no expert on vaccum systems but iirc a broke one can result in a bad/low idle and for some reason i think contributes to the climate control acting funny...I could be mistaken though.

Sounds DIY. Does anyone have an idea on the a/c issue? Is it the vac line that runs across the intake? Because mine is broke.

Thanks.

If that vacuum line is broke, the A/C will do what you said. Also check the vacuum tank in the p/s wheel well behind the liner. The connection behind there can break as well.

Okay, the A/C is fixed.

BUT I GOT A NEW PROBLEM!!

I was using my code reader to read a CEL. When it was doing the test messing with the RPM, the throttle cable broke. How hard are these to replace?

Thanks.

all gen1s hiss, our throttle body has a vacuum hole in the center, remove the intake tube and youll see what i mean, its in the center near the threaded hole for the intake retainer bolt, use some starter fluid to check for leaks..

yes the black line that runs across the intake is for the hvac, replace ALL broken hoses... they werent assembled with broken stuff, why would you leave broken things

I definitely know to fix all broken lines. I suppose I worded my question wrong.

I used carb a choke cleaner to figure out where this hiss is from, and I did this with the intake tube off. Spraying cleaner is minimal amounts around the intake, it appears that there is a leak on the intake gasket. How fun.

yup, Gen1s get intake leaks near the front of the plenum, i have one now, will be fixed with install of my new motor, grab your socket set and pop the hood mang, an intake gasket set isnt terribly expensive, i can give you torque specs and procedures if you need...

a tip for removal, take the IMRCs off with the upper plenum, then unbolt once the intake is off, install new gaskets out of car, bolt IMRCs back to upper intake and place all in car at the same time
