The Gf and I decided to spend the day before the fourth around the Stillwater area.
Before I left I tossed in a couple cans of r134a...the air was blowing pretty warm and it was getting sticky out.
Thought it would be nice to have the air up to snuff for the drive.

So We hit the freeway put the cruise on for our little 45 mile trip and we both notice a funny smell.

I was wondering if it was the freon I had just put in the car.

About half way into our trip we run into a little traffic and my brake pedal goes right to the floor
It comes up with about four pumps.

First thing that come to my mind is GMANs car going up in flames, so I find the quickest place to pull over wondering why I didn't put a dam fire ext. in my trunk.

I looked the car over and I can't see anything wrong.
Get back in and the brakes pump up good enough so I can get it stopped, so we decide to turn around and bring the dam car home and take hers.
I am thinking the dam booster is shot, maybe a master cylinder.

At this point I am driving back home without the cruise on....and I notice the smell is gone.

Like magic the brakes are back to normal.....no pumping to get the pedal up :shifty:
It has been fine since Sat.

I am not sure the history on the recall on this car.

Right now I disconnect the neg cable when the car is in the garage.
I know....fire is bad.

I found this thread clicky "thanks Chicken"
Time to see if the recall was done on this car.
I can't get it into the dealer until Friday.

The car can catch fire with the cruise off as well. I would go to a stealership and find out if the recall has been done. I'm pretty sure the battery being disconnected don't matter either. The car can still burst into flames if the recall hasn't been done.

how would the car burst into flames with the battery disconnected. if its an electrical fire, without the battery its a dead circuit.

that was the first thing i did when i need a replacement key mad was have the recall done on the gen 2 cruise control.... the r134aq is that hard to put in the car? my cars blowing hot air with it on full blast in the NC heat wave we have right now

I called the dealer with my vin # and they came up empty.
No recall is needed on this car...or if one was needed it was done.
They can't track history because all the info falls out of the system after ten years.
So as far as ford is concerned.....this car is up to date.

Its easy to add freon.
I have had to do it every summer on both my Marks.
Any box auto store has what you will need.

I took a look and it seems like the recall was done just like this pic.

At this point I am at a loss as far as wtf is going on with this car.

Shhhh, grownups are talking. :p

Sooo... From what I am gathering from this thread, and the linked thread... that solenoid/switch in the passenger fenderwell on the blue car above, is under the master cylinder, connected to the proportioning valve on ONLY 93's?

Anyone know if it is the same part number to replace it?

I'm curious before I get my car back together after being totalled... only to burn it to the ground :(

talk about irony!

No thats pic IS the switch installed right on all marks except 93s which are located under the master cylinder

Bring it to a dealer after its together....a good ford dealer.
They will recall the car if it has never been fixed.

you can try this website to see if the recall procedure has been done on your car too.

type in your VIN# and see if you need to have it done.

I checked the car....it seems like its been done.

Just for fun I plugged in the info though.....thanks for the link !

Your Vehicle

Vehicle: 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII
VIN: ###############
There are currently no recalls on this VIN.

So the link works it did see the car as being a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII.

I just don't understand a few things.

1) why did the car stink like hell when the cruise was on.
2) why did the brakes go to hell but like magic they are fine now.

I am just kinda freaked out over the whole thing right now.
I don't want to get on it for fear when I need a lot of brake....it won't be there.

good it be an improperly done recall? or a bad replacement part from the recall. etc etc etc

I believe all they do is put a fused harness on the plug. If they don't have the parts at the time they unhook it and that is also a solution.

note in that pic the recall has not been done that was strictly for location

if its not leaking it gets a double fused jumper harness
if it is leaking it gets a totally different switch and a jumper harness with no fuses

Ford Nut, is it possible you have some sort of intermittent leak where some fluid dropped on the exhaust and burned?

Maybe there is a stuck caliper that is boiling the fluid and the fluid cooled and brakes came back?

just 2 stabs in the dark....

You sure like to run your mouth or fingers. Have you ever heard the phrase, "If you don't have something nice to say, shut your :q:q:q:qing mouth? I was in a rush this morning and :q:q:q:qed up one sentence. So sue me. Call me old fashioned but these days its real easy to hide behind a computer and talk :q:q:q:q. Does putting someone down make you feel good? Its that kind of attitude that makes people not want to help anyone.

Do you have a pic of the double fused jumper harness?

Mine looks just like the pic so now I am thinking its not been done "runs out into the garage to disconnect the batt."

This is going to be fun to try to get a dealer to get this done.

Nope...no loss fluid.

Tonight driving home the pedal was wierd.
It was soft in the middle...but always held pressure.

I had to drive into St. Paul, as I put some miles on the pedal became firm though the whole travel like normal.

Ran the cruise for about twenty miles and everything was fine...no smell.

I have never seen a system act like this before.....strange for sure
