Help!!! Stuck 1/2 way through Hydraulic pump change

Hello all,

I am stuck half way through the hydraulic pump change! I have read the posts by others about not taking off the high pressure line on the pump but I can't get the bolt off the other end either! How did you guys get your 18mm around the nut??? There is no space for a wrench between the nut and the block...

Also, from what angle did you get your ratchet on the 4th bolt on the pump itself??? I don't see how a ratchet will go in behind the high pressure line???

I am so close but so far...

So timely! I just changed my radiator and the fan made this job the biggest pita!

I got my a$$ kicked by that high pressure fitting on the fan, and ended up having to make a wrench to fit. I had a junk 17/19 mm open end combo wrench, and ended up filing the 17 mm side out to fit the 18 mm nut on the line. I also had to cut the wrench off to give it fit. It was then not long enough to supply the correct force to loosen it. I ended up putting a 15 mm box end wrench on the handle of the stubby wrench I made and was able to apply that force off to the side near the air box. I could have bought or borrowed a stubby wrench but my car was not usable and I had no way to go out. After all of that, I found an 18 mm crows foot that I had to use on a Peugeot steering rack change 10 year ago, but it would not break that fitting free.

So I would try removing the high pressure line from the fan and then remove it from the pump, if you can get the pump out without removing the high pressure side from the pump.

What a sucky job, though. I noticed that the pep boys web site and possibly others, have electrical fans and sensors and harnesses available for our cars, so that could be a workaround from this hideous, bumbling hydraulic fan.

Oh and be prepared for a mess. The oil just starts flowing out of the fan as soon as the line comes off. That was all I could smell when driving to work today.
 
Well, I got the high pressure line off by pulling the fan shroud up high enough to get my wrench on the nut. Now I am stuck with removing the pump. The bolts are in so tight I can't remove them. I am using a 10mm socket and even tried a ratcheting socket. My fear is that in QuickLS's posts and others there is a problem with the aluminum stripping. Not sure what to do next here???

Did all you other guys use 10mm sockets and just torque the :q:q:q:q out of them???
 
You should probably just remove the whole fan assembly. To do that, you'll also have to remove the low pressure return line. Then, it is just a pair of screws at the top sides of the shroud pointing into the engine bay on the sides of the radiator. Pry up on the heater valve control cable hold downs and they will pop out of the shroud. They're on the left as you face the engine. Follow the low pressure line and unclip it from the shroud on the bottom and side as that line runs out to the area between the radiator and the condenser.

my experience

the pump was easy to remove, but removing the line nuts was impossible. I had all the right tools and those nuts would not budge. What might work is to remove the entire system and use a custom made socket on a power impact wrench. I never did get it to come off, so I took it to the dealer, were they fixed it overnight. Not sure how they did it. Let us know how it turned out.

'soak' the bolts in an oil based lubricant like wd40 over night.
