I think my new fuel pump is bad

Had my 255 LPH Walbro installed and since then the car is taking 2-3 seconds to crank and start. When I go to KO position I do not hear the pump prime at all. I turned a sharp left into the lot today and it died, something it has never done before. When it is running down the road or idling it is fine. I did notice before I turned it over to be installed that the basket looked stock and unmodified. Could that be the problem? Luckily this is not my primary car and I can let it sit for a while, but I hate to spend another $200 for a pump after I just had this done.

'97. I'm not out much as far as parts and labor goes, I had the DS done at the same time and the extra was minimal. If I have to replace it I will do it myself this time.

The walbro works just fine in a gen 2... that being said the Focus pump is probably a better choice...

How about the one that Supercoupe performance sells?

I'm still wondering why it is not priming before I start it up. That is the only thing making me hesitant at this point about swapping it out again, I'm not completely sure if it is really bad.

I was having issues myself recently. Part of my problem was that my battery was dropping down to 9-10 volts when I tried starting the car. The engine would turn over but the fuel pressure would drop enough so the car would not start up.

I thought that was quite odd that the engine would turn over but the fuel pump wasn't working enough to push enough pressure upon startup.

I replaced the battery and my car fires up perfectly every time now.

I'll look into that, thanks.

Well the fuel pump was changed out again and I still have the same problem. The fact that it is getting worse is making me thing the crank position sensor is on the way out. I will replace that and if that does not cure it I will starting to look for a pressure leak somewhere in the system. If I let the pump prime for a few times before starting it still does not start right up and I get a raw gasoline smell when it finally does. The fuel filter, boots and plugs have also been changed. When the car gets going it runs smooth and strong without any hesitation.

Possibilities...

Clogged fuel filter
O2 sensor
IAC
PCV

I sure hope you have better luck than I've had. Thousands thrown at the car and it still drives like crap.

Fuel filter is brand new, O2's were replaced shortly before I got the car and since I have no idle problems I don't think it is the IAC. Pretty sure I have a bad CPS or have a pressure leakdown problem somewhere in the system. Unfortunately I have not had time in the past month and a half to even mess with it. If the CPS (cheap) does not fix it I will start troubleshooting the fuel system.

Why dont you save some money and check the fuel pressure first and make it less of a guess.

Ok I have been drinking all day, but I remember Jamie changing his pump and having to hook the red wire to the black wire and vise versa. The title was "Thanks KK for being a young douchebag, you really helped me out." Not that this is your problem, but that title makes me laugh. Good luck with your prob.

If I can get my hands on one I will. The car is going to DLF in a month or so for a Cobra intake swap (still rounding up parts), so I might have him take a look at it.
