Hello!

I will be buying a 93 mark this weekend and overall the car is fine execpt the charging system. The owner said that he has replaced the alternator and battery 3 times and the car will not hold the charge. He said that a mechanic told him that the factory alarm system could be draining the system. I not too sure about that but i'm writng this to get any ideals to the cause of this.

Thanks.

it alaso could be the wiring harness, something sounds a little fishy about it, doesn't sound like it is a problem with the alternator, unless he really cranked on the bolt and broke the porcelin

Check the pigtail on the alternator to see if it's corroded or cracked. Buy your own battery 850/1000 and then have the alternator checked while it's running. Have the entire charging system checked. I'm not sure how much you rely on that persons word but something tells me that the battery buying hasn't been happening and it has a dead cell.

Do you know where the alternator was purchased?

no i don't know where he got the alternator from. I will check all the connections and the pigtail and replace as needed. So you don't think the alarm has anything to do with it?

I think that the mechanic might have been charging for parts not replaced. I have seen that happen on many occasions.

My guess...cheap alt. is eating battery's.

If it was me I would go with a new battery and a rebuilt alt form max at 5 star.
Put in a new batt. and see how many volts the alt that is in the car is pushing.

ok. I have a update! I was able to find out some more info on the car. The alternator was installed by the owner. The alternator is from salvo auto parts and is still under warranty. The battery is from wal-mart and is still under warranty. The car has a factory alarm plus a aftermarket remote start system. The owner is saying that the factory alarm is the problem, so i had him remove the fuse and battery is on a charger. The battery terminals were all corroded and nasty looking. I wasn't able to get a good look at the harness that plugs into the alternator. I had asked the owner when its running is it getting 14 volts and he said no. I will start from harness and go from there. Any other suggestions?

First things first, just to rule them out go have both the alt and battery tested. It's free at a few different places like Autozone, takes about 5 minutes.

My chit alt was tested ok by a local rebuilder.
I had a similar problem.

I installed a Alt form max and a new batt it it was fixed.
I found this info on this forum using a simple search.

Thats what worked for me.
Alt has to push 14v for the system to work.
