the clear coat- i'm guessing that's what it is- is 'flaking' off of the bumper. is there anything i can do? would a clay bar to clean it up? mechanic said to let it run it's course then when it's an issue, repaint bumper for $700

the paint is still intact. here's a pic.

any ideas?

You should be able to get the bumper painted for cheaper than that. Really once the clear coat on paint starts to chip, there's nothing you can really do. The only fix is to get the bumper repainted. But $700 hundred dollars, that's too too too much just to repaint a bumper. Shop around for quotes.

ok thanks. it's just on the bumper, and only on that part i posted. so since it's plastic, i'm assuming i can wait until i can afford to repaint it?

I got quoted 400 at one shop and 250 at another for the bumper.

Hmm...

Why does this happen? The flaking I mean...

Ok I'll look around. Prolly leave it as is for now

The sun and not taking care of it. Chemical hitting it and staying on there too long. Stuff like that is my guess

My guess to why this is happening is because its been repainted. The peeps who did it didn't do a good job. That is happening to my bumper and because of reason stated.

I just had my front bumper cover repainted. (which means stripped of existing paint first obviously..so repainting has more labor than painting a brand new bumper cover). They quoted me $480 for the whole job with the bumper cover on the car and $360 if I removed the bumper cover and brought it in. I chose the latter. They did an excellent job. Perfect match, no orange peel, gloss depth excellent, only 1 slight, tiny run (Small shop in Maryland).

its happening in large spots all over my car, was before I had it (because I take excellent care of my baby)... a good wax job makes it a lot less noticeable.. but I
m at the point where I'm pretty much going to need my vehicle repainted.

ok yeah. i know for a fact the bumper has been repainted and it's a cheap ass job at that. so taht's gotta be it. because i wash my car once a week and take care of it. i guess i'll just wait until it gets worse. i'll try the wax maybe. sounds like buying a new bumper is cheaper?

There was a bad batch of clear around about 2-3 years ago. the paint company bought all the paint jobs here that the clear fell off. It was not the painters fault it was a whole lotta bad clear going around everywhere. Here at the dealer we had to redo a bunch of cars.
It all has to come off and the bumper redone.

How would you find out if a car is eligible for that? Or is that not available anymore..

thats not my problem, but a guy at work backed into my car, drove off and never came back to work, and no one told me about for 2 weeks (@ssholes)lol, its finally starting to spider out and look worse, so i'll just use that as an excuse to get the lse bumper, and 700 to repaint it way to much, although i got quoted to 300 to paint a new trunk lid

i hate clear coat mine is doing it all over and it sucks looks like a new paint job in the future shop around my advise lol....

Could he wet sand the affected areas down and spray clear? I have a 2x2 square on the drivers door that has the clear gone.. I don't want to spray the whole door for that little of a piece..

I would try something it to make it less noticable until you can get it repainted. Also shop around for the best price from a QUALITY shop, or you'll be right back in the same boat. My front bumper was pitted and had flaking clear coat when I bought it from bugs, stones, but the dealer resprayed it.

thanks. so i'm going to get it fixed soon. i was thinking of buying an lse bumper and having it painted. will it fit ok? (04 ls)

obviously i'll have to get new fogs but will the main set be ok too?

Lse bumper will fit perfectly. I just installed one on my 04 and it looks great.Really easy to take off your bumper and install the new one.

i went to work on the bubbles with the clay bar and the solution that comes with it.... it helps. may want to try it until it becomes unbearable...

stop masterbating on your car and maybe it would stop flaking :P

i saw your title... i see you got rid of the fatty pic; all i see now is a fat guy clinging to the remains of what, might or might not have been, a house.

so petes; are we going to duke it out in random threads? isn't that a waste of our time?

i said i was sorry. can you find it in your heart to let go?
