I think the Nav screen in our 2004 V8 Sport has lost some brightness. Is this possible and has anyone else experienced this. Can't imagine what the repair $ would be for this one unless the backlight is the problem and it's easily replaced.

I am not sure if you aware, but you can control the brightness manually. If i remember correctly, there are only two options, either dim or bright. You might have accidently took it off the auto mode and it could be in a dim mode.

Check to see if your interior dim scroller (next to your headlight switch) is turned down, turn it all the way up just before it gets friction @ the point of where the interior lights would come on manually.

Also check in the settings of the Menu to turn day mode on, so it is brighter. I have mine set to be on daylight mode all the time, this also prevents it from changing brightness from turning on your headlamps.

In cold weather the display screen requires about 20-30 warm-up to acheive maximum brightness. The owners manual tell you to switch to day mode and adjust the brightness control, then switch back to auto mode after the warm-up period but that does'nt seem to help any.

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned but thought readers would have assumed I did so. Yes I checked the interior dimmer next to the headlight. Yes I checked the menu screen. The unit is in day mode. What seems weird is the fact that when I adjust "brightness" up and down it does not seem to make a difference. Someone mentioned a "dim button" Unless they are talking about the rotating interior light dim control I don't know what they are talking about. Has anyone had their screen go completely blank which would indicate the backlight has failed?

Older LCD-tech screens will dim out as they age, IIRC. I believe UV light causes that.

Mine went black when I got my from winshield tinted. The guy used too much water and probably got some on the nav somehow. I turned it off and on again and no luck so I decided to just turn the screen off even though it was black and it showed less light after I turned the screen off. WHen I got home turn the car on and the nav was back to normal. Water prob dried up by that time.

That's not the issue here.

The backlight for the LCD is a CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) tube. With time, just like any other fluorescent light, it gets dimmer. Unfortunately, neither the tube or the display is considered "user serviceable."
There are probably a few places out there somewhere that would be willing to "re-lamp" the unit for you.

i had the same issue and they replaced the screen for it so the screen is actually removable go to the dealer and ask them for the nav screen only not the whole unit.
