how can i tell if my car has a chip?

damn if it does that stock i want to get a chip.. i just got this car and im new to mk8s and have never really floored it

I hate you low altitude guys.

I have to do a bunch of mods on mine, to experience what it is like to run at sea level.

It could just be your 1-2 shift accumulator is going out. I think there's a TSB out about switching to an upgraded piston.

But, you could always physically look for a chip in the ECU? I have a gen 2, so maybe someone else with a first gen can help you out about where to look to find the chip.. if there is one.

undo the 4 screws under the steering column that hold the panel that would be directly in front of your knees. remove it. in between the e-brake & the brake pedal you'll see a metal box with a gazillion wires running out of it. On the back of it theres a 2" slot. They come factory with a plug in the slot. It covers the port that the chip would go in.
it's esier to remove the ECU (box) & just look at the back of it. If it still has the plug in it, chances are that there's no chip. But pull it out & look to be sure.

Here's a simple test for a chip ... If your Mark VIII goes over 135 mph ... then you have a chip ..

If you get up to 120 or 125 and the car just comes to a stop ... no more go you don't have a chip ...

easiest way to tell...

scan it for trouble codes.

if you get the "bad pcm memory" code it probably has a chip.

eec iv cars cant store a trouble code with a chip in

I could do that with bad rear tires, miss having 4:10 gear, converter, shift kit

Mine will chirp into second real nice if I shift manually, if I just nail the gas and let it go on its own then I only get a small chirp.
I have been told that these transmissions dont like to be maunaly shifted to get some scratch, they just wont hold up stock.
any opinions on that.

As far the chip, I sold the comp from my parts car and didnt even check if it had one, how could I be soo dumb. i forgot who it went to but Im pretty sure it was someone here.
have many people found chips in there marks when buying them from regular(not lincoln nuts) people?

Just wondering how'd ya ever come up with CHROMEBROW?? By the way your Avatar is Hypnotizing me but that's cool.

I came up with this by the chrome trim on the frony of my Gen 1. Under the hood and above the grille. I figured it would be a cleaver way for people to know which Mark I drove, I think most totally miss it, but I've had a few people catch it. My only delima now is should I change my user name when I decide to paint it to match the car.

UUMMMM, No! Maybe I'll become Tbrow, no not Tbag.
Ya,Tbrow the magnificent.
For all those a tad bit slower then the rest, the T would stand for the first letter of the color of the car.

Okay so where were we.....

Or see how fast it will go:

Scanning for codes probably being the easiest. See XLR's post a couple down from this.

"If the chrome brow turns red, you don't have a chip"

Oh but I will:steering

Scanning for codes probably being the easiest. Take it to a place the scans for codes for free and see what happens..

they usually dont scan EEC 4 cars, only obd2.

you can do the "jumper wire/ count the CEL flashes" method which is free.

Chromebrow, I am not jumping on that stupid thread bandwagon
but I just spent about 45 mindless seconds staring at your avatar.

Can you change it to one of those animated giganormous boobs avatars instead

Ah, that doesn't sound as fun lol. I edited my post to reflect the correct method though.

LOL

But.. the best and only way to be certain is to crawl your fadazz out there..get under the dash, pull the C clip that holds the PCM in place and actually LOOK at it.
(as was described in detail above)

A harsh or abrupt shift could very well indicate a transmission issue
(also described in detail above)
