I wanted to try and do inserts to make my grille look like the McLauren Grille. The people in our datacenter are cleaning up and throwing out alot of old computer cabinets. Most of these cabinets have the metal with the holes similar to the the McLauren grille. I took a sheet of this from one of the cabinets being thrown out (approx 7' tall by 24" wide) which would allow me to make about 4 or give me 4 chances to mess up on cutting out one LOL! Does anyone have a template available as I know someone did a group buy for the steel sheets a while back? Attached are 2 pics showing what I have, I'm thinking it will not be as transparent once installed on the car?

We never had a template for the mclaren material. I just had the company (Ametco) cut it to 12 x 48 dimensions (with the rows going horizontal like the mclaren grille). You will have to make your own template. I made one out of cardboard for mine.

The holes on that seem closer together than the maclaren. I read someone else using those computer sheets for a grill. Looks like a good project

Yea I bet that will look good if you cut it correctly. Also maybe throw some flat black spray paint on it.

I agree with pete and make a template out of cardboard so you only have to cut one. You can make a template for the bottom grill too and use the leftover material. Nice Score!!

Just another suggestion buddy.. use some black or chrome door trim around the edge of your cut.. makes it look more pro.

Did you remove the grille to make the cardboard template and how would I do this if my grille ends up not being the 2-piece version? I realize that the holes are closer but I think it will still turn out nice if cut correctly.

Pektel, do you have pics of your finished product?

Thanks....

My upper grille is the manufactured McLaren grille. I was just talking about the lower grille.

If I were to make a template for the upper grille, I would remove it from the car. It only takes a couple minutes.

I don't have any pictures of the finished lower grille, as I scrapped the project. It didn't look stock enough for my tastes. I prefer mods that look like they could've come from the factory. So my lower grille I just painted flat black to match the flat black of the mclaren center.

From my experience in datacenters it will be more transparent from further away unless the light is hitting it just right. It will be interesting to see, but I would bet that you will see a lot of radiator through there when you are done. Depending on what type of racks they have you might have some better options. Look for an older SUN or Compaq rack, I think those holes where further apart. Any newer rack is designed to let as much light/air through as possible for cooling and visual inspection.

Speaking of datacenters, ask your guys if there are interested in selling theirs (depending on size). I'm in the business of buying them. Sorry for the plug (not really)

I'll check some of the other cabinets that they are tossing out. I was looking at the material yesterday and it would be kind of transparent unless I make it an overlay and paint the waterfalls black. As for your business, do you mean in the business of buying datacenters or old computer racks/cabinets? We're not moving out of the datacenter for about another year or more. We've been virutualizing most of the legacy systems which eliminates the use for so many bulky cabinets and shelves.

No, not the equipment. We actually purchase datacenters and then lease them back to the original owner, plus move in other tennants. It gives the original owner capital to use for other purposes, moves the datacenter from cap-ex to op-ex, and ideally with virutalization the original tennant will use less space anyway giving them additional monthly savings. It has to be a fairly large facility though. Typically 10,000 square feet is as small as we will go.

That's my sales pitch. TaDaa!
