Steering wheel radio controls!

Recently, my radio controls on my steering wheel went out! I’m have the understanding that once I put an aftermarket deck in that those controls won’t work anymore anyways so… But, I still have my OE deck in and IT’S A BIG DEAL TO HAVE TO MOVE MY HAND AND THOSE COUPLE OF INCHES AND ACCTUALLY TOUCH THE BUTTONS!!!;)
It’s almost like the side controls for going through the radio stations has broke the spring and now only the volume controls work but it does two things at once! By holding it down I can put up the volume and change the stations in one motion! All the other controls don’t work, mute, media, change station…
I have intentions of putting an aftermarket deck in next year but I’m just wondering if anybody else has experienced this and if they’ve fixed it or just lived with it until they bought a new deck?
 
Many have experienced this problem (I'm not one of them, yet).
You will have to replace the clock-spring in the steering wheel. If you don't, you will eventually lose the air-bag, cruise control, and the horn, as well as the radio controls.
Many aftermarket headunits can work with the factory steering wheel buttons. Most need and adapter to work, some don't.
 
yea it thats I have a pioneer d3 i could of keepte my steering wheel controlls but didnt want to pay for it and im going to use the clockspring to run the wires for the paddle shifter's!
 
+2 on the clock spring, i also have a AVIC head unit and use the SWI-PS to retain the factory steering wheel controls, as i dont like touching the screen because i have to look at it and i can use the steering wheel controls just by feel.

But wait a sec, if I get an aftermarket deck I can still use the steering wheel buttons?
What's this SWI-PS you speak of?

pac makes a module called swi-ps, this module has a harness that need to be wired into power, ground, and the steering wheel controls signal wire (which is at the radio) then you program it, then you plug it into a compatible radio (some pioneer's and sony's) then you enjoy using the steering wheel controls on an aftermarket deck (however, some radios will have a small delay that the factory radio didn't have)

Sorry for bringing an old thread up but I want to do what zachg2001 ^^ is doing.. Use the wires for the paddle shifters.. I was looking at some wiring diagrams and I see only one wire going to the radio.. Am I missing something? Right now, when I take my deck out, I see one wire that isn't connected (the one for mute/phone).. Were is the others for like volume and media? I was looking at using the media and mute/phone because I wouldn't use them if they worked anyways..
 
I like the steering wheel controls because I can nochalantly turn up the music when either the kids are being dumb or the wife wants to talk about my money spending :D

LOL!! :D My clockspring is bad so guess what.. No radio controls.. I wanted to do the paddles at the same time as clockspring replacement.. I wish I could say the same but my kid doesn't ride in the ls..

Sorry, your plan won't work. There is just one wire. Different switches for the radio controls switch different resistances onto the one wire. The radio figures out which switch was pressed by measuring the current and voltage on the wire.

That's what I figured.. Damn.. That would have been perfect but I guess I will have to do it the same way quik did it..
 
yep - that is what we discussed in the PMs - alot of these types of controls use different resistance as the output based on the combination of the switches press - so the switch is not a typical two-lead thing you can simply cut into and use for your own purpose.

Yea.. I didn't understand what you were talking about.. I thought you were talking about a button where you push half-way down to do one thing and all the way down to do another.. Too bad I can't remember how to do circuit boards.. I could make a board for the clockspring.. That was like 5 years ago and I don't know if I would feel comfortable working on something that, if wired wrong, could kill me.. AKA airbag.. :p
