Oil Consumption V6

I've had this car for six years and 90,000 miles (it now has 123,500). Been changing the oil every 5,000 with Mobil One 5W-30. Never used any between oil changes. Yesterday started it up and noticed a puff of smoke. Checked the oil and I'm down one quart (in 3,500 miles).

So valve stem seals? rings?

As background car runs strong. Check engine for catalyst inefficiency comes and goes (one for a week or so, off for a week or so). Original cats and O2s, still getting 24 - 27 per gallon.

What's the temp/dew point? The "smoke" may be nothing more than condensation. A quart every 3K is considered normal, though our V6 "uses" about a quart every 10K.

could be nothing

Just replaced my gaskets on valve covers and upper and lower manifold on an 01V6 109k. All of them were leaking oil. Oil was leaking into back spark plug areas too.

If it's not leaking any, I wouldn't worry about it at all. My '97 F-150 has 325,000 miles. It's been using a quart of oil every 1100 or so miles for the last 200,000 miles. I've added well over 100 quarts of oil. The truck still as the original cats and 2 of the 4 02 sensors, and one of those was because of a failed internal heater. A little oil usage won't effect anything unless the owner is too stupid or lazy to check/add oil.

check your intake track for oil - if the PCV is out you 'could' be chewing oil through the intake.

what sucks about that pcv is that its sandwiched between the heads on the block. i have a motor on the floor and i couldnt get it out without pulling heads off, its a black boxy thing. stupid, just put a filter like you would use on an air line on it between block and intake
