Differential Swap

Ok so i may haved quote him wrong!

Quote "THe early LSes use a higher gear ratio - so if you are buying new, buy those ones - it will give you a little better jump."

My fault. Ok so i just need to be sure i ask my parts dealer for the 3.58 gear specifically for the 99-00 Gen1

That sounds more like it. It was the early builds that had the 3.58's. I'm sure Quik knows which ones were which.

By the way I like your LS it has a really clean smooth/elegant look to it.

Yep. From an 05 Mustang GT. I reused the ring gear and pinion, so obviously I stuck with 3.31's. Don't know if you have 3.58's in your's, but that's the best gearing you are going to get without swapping the entire pumpkin, fabbing brackets, and custom drive shaft as previously stated. 3.58's were found in all gen 2's and some gen 1's.

Shim kit for the 8.8 works for our 8.0. I had to buy one to find out.

Also buy new ring gear bolts. They see a lot of stress.

New axle seals, diff bearings too. I didn't buy new caps, don't know if you'll need to.

I bought motorcraft 80/90 and the friction modifier additive.

Pattern paint. Hopefully you have a dial indicator.

Other than the standard mechanic's tools, that should be about it for parts needed. Oh, let me know if you need torque specs.

Don't know how messed up it is in there though. May need new ring gear/pinion (which by how hammered you make it sound, there are almost positively some chipped/broken teeth)

THat will come in handy for when and if I ever do LSD on my LS

Pete where have you been lately(Not that I really care), but you havent been plaguing the LS board like usual lol

I was in the southern part of the state at a music festival. Had VIP backstage passes and backstage camping. Because I rock. :p

Rocked my freakin socks off. Big hippie fest. Lots of great music, dancing, parties. Just got back Sunday night, and took Monday off.

ex-hippie. still dig some of the music. don't partake of the lifestyle anymore though.

I'm pretty sure he was talking to you. Are you going to get a new computer? They are pretty cheap if all you need the computer to do is troll forums. I'm sure Dell has a $300 cheapo ready to ship :D

Lol Pektal now you know when I say Pete I mean his dumba$$ lmfao, how was your LSD install anyway, 1 day project or weekend? How many beers?

I actually am gonna be custom building my own from the ground up but I'm deciding all my parts but I'm pursueing an Intel 4 Quad Processor with a Geforce 9800 GTX graphic card, 5-8GB of ram, 850watts of power, multiple rip drivers, hybrid cooling system, internal surge protection, and not to mention this pretty sweet case

But in silver instead of red so it can match my LS nicely :-D

Just one of my choices. I want a PC that will stand out :-D
These towers even come with neon cathode lighting

If I had money to spend on some Government code hacking computer Id spend it on my cars instead.. Just saying, I like my laptop..

Ok so back to the subject, I found a Master Bearing kit that includes Pinion and Carrier Bearings, Pinion and Carrier Shims, Pinion Nut, Pinion Seal, Ring-Gear Bolts, Crush Sleeve, Cover Gasket, Gear Marking Compound, Locktite, Pilot Bearing and O-Ring (when applicable). They offer this in an 8" and 8.8". Since i am only doing the 8.8 into the 8 do i need to stick with the 8" internal kit or do i need the 8.8 kit? Will the shims from the 8" work or do I need the shims from the 8.8" kit? Does anyone know if Solid Pinion Spacers can be used to replace the Crush Sleeve? It giving you the ability to remove the yoke without changing the pinion bearing preload.

Ah Haa! I figured it out! The 8.8 pieces are all still the same except for the rear pinion bearing and race. Those have to be bought individually from ford but don't cost much. It's a cheaper more effective way to go than to piece it out. I'm finding all sorts of cool things out!
