Wierd Leak

2001 LS V8 106,855 miles

New R1 concepts Rotors and pads
Intake with custom heat shielding
Wheels- Ace Deluxe 19' Machined and Black
Valve cover gaskets(both)
All new brake hardware
Other custom body mods, no mechanical.
(owned since 95,000)

I discovered a long dryish dirty clear moisture/oil on the garage floor from just behind driver front wheel and it seemed to run up to nearly the bumper. (decline torwards drain in floor). I only drive the car six blocks to work and and six back each day. Car is stored winters. I am in the process of changing all the pulgs and coils (in mail)... But i know this is unrelated. My car makes a low whine at slowturns(parking underground) and sometimes at stop signs or stop lights. My coolant was low but i think it's been that way for a while and my coolant is green...this was clear. It looks like something leaked when I got home last night and then stopped.

Any thoughts...?

PS- I hate ford Dealerships in Milwaukee WI, Primarily UPTOWN MOTORS. Satan works there.....I am sure of it.

Look at the bushings on the front suspension on that side. See if one of them is the source. Did you hit a bad pothole in the last several day?
Also, check the AC compressor, it might also be the source. (If it's the AC, then there will probably be AC oil on the engine oil pan too.)
 
You get in the car to drive 6 blocks to work? Talk about lazy! :D

Thanks guys...not lazy. I just love my car!!!! And I'm a chef, so I have knives, a computer, and clipboards I bring home every day.
 
smell or taste the fluid and you should be able to identify it. being a mechanic who grew up in the garage this does not disgust me as it would some. I eat breathe and sleep car. but dont drink the stuff either, spit it back out. im just saying.
 
^ before you do that, PRAY the neighbors dog or car didn't pee under your car.

I'd give the fluid a "smell" and "rub between fingers" test before I jumped right into TASTE TEST
 
It's clear and greasy, oderless. It only leaks when the car is running and it's coming from right behind the wheel. when the vehicle is off, the leaking stops. (and no pets in the garage!)
 
And....for the Yellow coolant guys out there. The 2001 used the green coolant. They hadn't changed over to the 'long life' or 'yellow' coolant til later models. so my car uses green until i can get the system flushed and change over.

Your fuel filter is right behind the driver's side front wheel. However, gasoline is far from odorless.
 
What else is even on that side? Coolant resevoir, power steering, brake master cylinder, can't think of anything else from memory (although I'm sure there's probablyl more there.)

It's not brake fluid right?
 
At this point I think that is my fear. Brake fluid is the only thing I can think of that would be close to that. And how it only leaks when the engine is runing would tell me that the leak is being fed by a pump or use of the brakes.

Are you adding brake fluid. Enough of a leak to see like that, and you would get a low brake fluid warning pretty soon.
 
And you'd think he would notice a difference in brake feel too.

Well, Power steering fluid is just hydraulic fluid as well, right? You say you hear a whine when turning. Maybe it's just a power steering line? I don't know where the lines run though, so I can't guide you. Don't even know if they would leak at the location you are describing. The brake master cylinder, however, is RIGHT where you say it's leaking.
 
I haven't added any fluids except a very light top off to coolant and power steering. I didn't think you could just add brake fuild without bleeding and repressurizing. Am I mistaken?

Also...Joegr, you said the fuel filter is behind the driver wheel, is it hard to get to to change?
 
Not at all difficult to change the fuel filter. Just remove the driver fron wheel, and the splash guard. It's RIGHT in front of you when you remove the guard. Get some fuel line disconnect tools (a couple bucks at an auto parts store) so you don't break the clips. And have a rag handy to catch the fuel spray when you disconnect the first line. Toughest part on mine was removing the bracket that holds the filter. It was rusted.

Thanks. I bought the filter and had yet to research it's whereabouts. I stored the car for eight months and want to make sure all the filters are clean and clear. Plus 100,000 miles, figured it was time.
 
and also you can add brake fluid at any time there is no bleeding unless you open a line.:cool:
 
:N :N :N I hate it more when the neighbor's car takes a dump in my parking spot....it gets real messy
 
Car....not cat. The only cat in my garage is an old 80's jag ......xj6....no threat to the ls.
