a local exhaust shop is running a special right now on 3 inch dual exhaust for 200 bucks i think, i dont know any of the specifics or anything at the moment such as the type of mufflers or anything but it seems like a pretty cheap price and this shop is a very popular shop around my town. but my question is is a 3 inch pipe to big for these cars? ive read in a few threads about the need for back pressure with these cars. ive wanted an exhaust since i bought it but couldnt ever get myself to spend the money, but with my bday in a week i think that might be a good present.

2.5" is as big as I would go with this car, and even then that's a little on the big side for the size of the motor. 3" exhaust and your car won't get out of it's own way. The power band will be moved much further up in the RPMs.

If they're doing 3" pretty cheap, then 2.25 or 2.5 has to be cheaper. Unless nobody out there wants 3" and they have too much pipe left over that they're trying to get rid of.

Correct, back pressure is Essential for the prime operating variables of these engines....As far as i know (tho I have only really started to read about them)

i thought i remember dual 2.25 being the right size for this motor with around 100 hp power adder.

Yea i was thinking that going that big would be a problem. I will have to go in there and see if they can go smaller for the same price.

Isnt there a way of finding out what the diameter should be according to the amount of HP being put out?

The LS will never see any power great enough for a exhaust over 2.5 and as said thats even pushing it.

Is 2.25" the gen 1 stock meaurement? When I replaced the pipe between resonators and mufflers when I did the magnaflows, there was a noticeable visual difference between the pipe sizes.

I went with 2.5 in throughout w/ an xpipe right off the converters and moroso spiralflows and aside from being a bit loud at high rpm I didnt notice any loss in torque, however I did notice that the upper power band, ie, vct activation picked up considerably, I do however think 3" would be too big
