P1233 DTC - related?

Hey guys. Just got my xcal and first tune from Rob loaded up. On my first drive with the tune, I had an overheat, and happened to be right by my normal shop, so I pulled in. Fan was running REAL hard, CEL came on, Engine power reduced mode, etc. Then she started to sputter right before I shut it off.

Let it sit for a few, turned it back on, and the temp returned to normal, and stayed that way. So I am pretty sure it's a sticky thermostat or air in the system. Did not overheat anymore the rest of yesterday or this morning.

Anyways, when I got back to work, I grabbed the xcal to read the codes. I got 3:

P1233 - FPDM Disabled/Offline
P1285 - Cylinder head overtemp cond.
P1299 - Cyl Head Overtemp protect act.

I understand the last 2, but what would cause the P1233? That wouldn't be the result of the tune, right? Would the computer regulate the engine power by messing with the REM and disabling the fuel pump to prevent any engine damage?

Any help would be appreciated. I did search, but didn't find any useful information. I found some very technical posts by Quik, but they went right over my head.
 
believe or not - the P1233 is usually caused by low fuel level....

it stands for Fuel Pump Driver Module off-line - which in the LS's case is actually the REM (rear electronics module). We have not heard of those failing - and usually there is a host of other issues.

So make sure you have some gas in it - then if the problem continues - you are troubleshooting the standard fule pump problems.... fuses, relays, interia switch, .... pump....
 
Thanks, Quik. I did have plenty of gas in the tank. As I was pulling a left hand turn out of the parking lot for the first time after the tune, I floored it, and cranked the wheel. I would not think that bit of spirited driving would throw the fuel in the tank around enough to do something to throw the code. I was thinking maybe that may have had a one time effect, and threw the code.

But for those like you that auto-x, if you aren't experiencing it, then I damn sure wouldn't from that one incident.

Probably just a freak thing. I'll check the fuses though.

I kind of doubt it would be a fuse since the car runs fine now.

I didn't pull the fuses like the manual stated when uploading the custom tune. Think that could be a possibility?
 
yeah - the whole point of keep the pup in a basket like the LS uses is that fuel is kept around the pump at all times - for both cooling and near the pickup when turning/stopping/accelerating. I guess you never know.

Back when SCT first came out - the other computer on the system bus would interfere with the upload process - so SCT's solution was to pull fuses - here's my post on it -> http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showpost.php?p=27874&postcount=8 (I helped their tech support get the LS going. Steeda actually had an LS down at the time as well.)

But since those days - I never pull the fuses anymore.....

I got that same problem last month but I haven't put the Xcal tune in.....and the dealer suggested it was a sticky thermostat.....damn thing....
 
I changed the thermostat a little over a year ago. Also replaced one of the CHT sensors (well, had the shop do the CHT sensor).

That's why I'm thinking the overheat condition was most likely because of an air bubble. I haven't noticed a coolant leak, so not a cracked degas bottle.

That wasn't really my point of concern, though. I can trace down the overheat issue.
 
I do NOT think it was related to the tune. I just wanted to make sure I had any possible causes on the table when stating my problem.

Again, I don't think the tune had anything to do with it. Everything is back to normal now. The P1233 just seemed like an odd code for an overheat CEL.
 
Mine sits in Safe Mode when i put my tune in..ha its kinda fun to watch all the lights flicker..:shifty:
 
Good things to take in since I might get an Xcal this summer but still unsure of the Xcal 2 or Xcal 3 models....I should try looking for other threads with pros/cons of both.....unless the Xcal3 is just a newer updated model.....
 
You will get the same tune from either device. It does not matter whether it's the xcal 2 or 3.

Do not let this thread discourage you from getting one. The tune was not the cause of the problem.

It's worth the money just to be able to start in 1st, and fix the sloppy transmission!
 
I didn't mean to start that...I was thinking out loud...:slam

I'm totaly intrested in a tune, it made a world of difference on my old malibu.

THanks man. It'll be sweet to fix the tranny bugs without dishing out TONS of money..about only 350+ for the SCT device..that's a steal...as far as compared to the header job or tranny switch my buddy suggested :/
