Gonna try to revive the Mark (Egr and crossover tubes, among other things)

Hey Guys,

I've been away for the winter, periodically checking in, but since my Mark isn't running it's a little depressing.

In October the Mark died on the highway, and talking to people here, I replaced the tps switch to no avail. From what I've read and talked to members about, it looks like its probably a blown egr tube. It lost pretty much all power on the highway, and sounded like crap, along with the fact that a few days later I overheated the engine after trying to run it after replacing the tps switch.

I went out and bought new 02s and cats to go along with all the other exhaust components, but thats for a later time.

I don't want to attempt this myself, because if I do I won't get it done and I'd probably just get pissed and junk it.

Obviously with the weather warming up, I'd like to use my tax refund (1,000) to get her up and running again. It has sat since October without being started, and to be honest I'm feeling nostalgic, with the warm weather coming I can't be stuck driving this hunk of s--- Monte mighaswellbecalled Slowlo, so how much should I figure it'll cost to replace (at the least) the egr tube, crossover tube, and both 02s. I have the 02s, and would need to get the egr tube (dealer only, around 120 Maxx said) and a crossover tube, so how much labor would this run? I'm going to be moving out of my moms soon and my girlfriend hates the Mark, but I've got too damn much invested in it to not fix it, ya know?

Oh, and if anyone near RI wants to come do this when the weather gets better, I'll pay any fair price and supply any amount of beer needed haha

BTW... I would tell the GF to STFU never let a girl get between you and your favorite things, it will only cause misery for you.

If you had it towed to an exhaust shop and had the EGR tube replace and the O2's and cats changed you supplying the parts I would say around $500 would be reasonable.

The Coolant pipe and burping the coolant system is something I would do on my own..
 
Let me know if your looking for a used egr tube. I have two mine runs good without it on. Also have the front cross over pipe. Not used on mine either. All these parts are gen 2

so the cats arnt done yet? im wondering why it ran like crap, died etc. im thinking if the cats clogged and the psi from cruising on the highway finally built up and blew the egr pipe as the cats finally melted shut. cars can run with blown egr tubes, they just sound like a lawnmower
 
Yeah chicken I couldn't find anyone who would do the exhaust for anything reasonable. I had a guy tell me he pretty much just didn't wanna do it, and would charge around 1000 to turn me away. I'm assuming if I have the cats, 02s, and the rest of the exhaust done, along with the egr tube replaced, and possibly the iac just because, it'll be what I hoped and dreamed this car would be like to own. If after doing these repairs the car brought down 13-18 mpg, I'd toss the Monte to my girlfriend

My girlfriend knows there are 2 things shes just gonna have to deal with. First is my dog (luckily she loves the dog) and the Mark (she really does like cruising around in it, just not the amount of time the problems I have with it take to fix)

I guess I'll ask around the local exhaust shops casually until it gets warmer.
 
It won't do that... but it will likely blow a new hole in the exhaust if he doesn't replace the plugged cats first.
 
Thanks, I actually met up with an old friend whos father has tons of connections with auto shops, we're gonna talk about it this Friday. I just pm'd Maxx about getting that egr tube, and if someone wants to sell a crossover tube for a gen1 pm me, looks like shes coming back for the summer!
 
throw the EGR in the trash.

and before i hear some BS about how EGR lowers combustion temps, carbon dioxide doesn't burn very well now does it?

Which is exactly why it lower combustion temps... man I really like how you answered your own question and made yourself sound like an idiot Mr. MAP Sensor moron....
 
but you rave about it lowering combusion temps. but it does it by :q:q:q:qing up the burn. droping a cyclinder also lowers the temp, but thats not a good idea either.
 
I'm just going to leave it for now. Once this thing gets running again I'll worry about performance gains.

Answer these questions:

What does EGR do at WOT?

Why does it increase fuel economy?

You are so damn concerned about PEAK HP numbers you forget that the least amount of time your car spends anywhere is at peak power.... EGR is just another thing that improves overall driveability with no negative impact on power, so DELETE it all you want but mine will stay on my car...
 
it has zero effect on fuel economy. i had no change at all on every car i have ever owned and took it off on. explain to me how it "improves" MPG. i also didn't delete it for a HP gain, because frankly, there isn't a gain. i did it so my intake mani doesn't get all gunked up again after i cleaned it out.
 
Lol... it does increase fuel economy... deleting it usually results in a 1-2mpg loss... but I guess you are special. If your only reason for deleting it was keeping the intake manifold clean... well I guess that a reason.
 
In the old days deleting the EGR may have been a good thing. But not so much anymore.
