How do you tell when motor mounts need to be replaced?

When the motor pushes through the hood. :)

Or just open the hood and put it into gear, the engine should not move more than a half inch or so.

Or use a breaker bar on the driver's side and try to lift the engine, if you can do it by hand they are shot.

Is it safe to jack up the motor enough to remove and replace motor mounts or do you have to disconnect a whole bunch of stuff ?

Some info I have been told is that if your oil filter is really hard to remove its because your motor mounts are shot allowing the engine to drop down...

racepages.com has them by WestStar for $72.61 each either factory style hydraulic mounts or solid rubber either one.

where did you get 90 for a pair? i said 72.61 each for hydraulic or solid rubber. i'd put hydraulic back in if it was my own car.

These solid rubber engine mounts (the pair) are made of a highly flexable rubber compound which has a durameter rating of 60. After 60,000-100,000 miles, the possibility of worn, torn engine mounts could cause severe damage to your oil pan. Act now and replace them before they cause serious damage to various other parts of your engine. You will feel the difference in your ride! These mounts replace OEM liquid filled mounts and need the stock/originals brackets for installation. These mounts will fit the '91-95 5.0L THUNDERBIRD SC, 1994-97 4.6L THUNDERBIRD SC, 1986-1988 5.0L THUNDERBIRDS AND 1993-1998 LINCOLN MARK VIII.

oh thats where you got 90, i thought you misunderstood me, yes then i would say thats fair for a pair of them. actually it would be $100 shipped so thats still pretty good price. when i sell mounts i sell the whole thing, the mount and the brackets but you can buy mounts and re-use your old brackets as long as they arent all rotted or damaged.
