Well due to hurricane ike and my stupidity(my fault more than ike's) I think my motor is gone. I was driving through my neighborhood on 9/14/08 because my generator was out of gas so as I was coming back I see a pool of water that's a little less than the curb. I stop and and see that a few cars are going through it and a damn corolla goes too, so I was like heck ill go to! As i go across i press the gas a little and there you go my car shuts off and a I see a little bit of white smoke coming out of front driver side while I was driving. So it stops in the middle of the water and I push it out. I cranked twice and the second time it almost was about to crank but no luck. I had it towed to my house and opened the hood to let it dry. Well the next day i go and try to open the locks but the remote doesnt work so i put the key in and opened it. I sat inside and put the key in the ignition but didn't start it and noticed that the rpm guage is maxed out and my indash screen does not pop out and the windows wont go up and down. I have a optima yellow top battery and know the battery isn't bad. I than had an extra red top at home and plugged it in and it would work but slowly die again. So i left it at that because I had to go out of town. So I came back today in the morning. I pulled the coils off, took the intake off which was full of water in the baffles on the side and than took off the manifold and when i took off the intake manifold water spewed out. I than took out the spark plugs and tried to start the car to see if I could get the water out. No Luck. I can hear the starter clicking but nothing else. Is it time to say goodbye or is there anything you guys can tell me to do?
 
sounds toast to me. could be a number of things, but bent rod comes to mind. insurance may cover it and you'll only have to pay the deductible. you'll get a used motor out of a junkyard
 
Could be a toast but you've got an electrical short somewhere in the front of the car. You need to isolate that and disconnect the shorted circuit (pull the fuse(s)) then you can go about with finding out if the engine is shot.
 
I notice you list "custom cai" as a mod. Does it intake from outside the engine bay? Could you have sucked water into the engine? That can't be good for an engine...
 
i used to have a tube from the the tb down to the front of the lower grill but took it off in july because i knew hurricane season was here but this time all i had was the filter in place of the stock airbox. so a short ram.

White smoke could be steam coming from water getting on the exhaust. But, based on what happened when he took the manifold off I would bet water got all the way in.
 
did you drian all the fulids? bc i got stuck in a mud pit on my jeep when off roading and it died on me so i whinched myself out pulled all the plugs took of the cap and rotor the i manually crank the motor2 full times then put in fresh fuilds and new plugs and she fired right up
 
put also check all your connectsions in the front of the car you could of short something and thays why your battry is dieing and your not getting any power
 
I flooded a car by running it through water one time.

DO NOT do anything else to the car and contact the insurance company! What happened with mine is I told the insurance company what happened and they had me take the car to a reputable mechanic to determine what was the cause. I say don't touch anything because the machanic has to rule that it was flood water that did the damage. Once the mechanic determines that, the insurance company will either fix the car or total it out.
 
The initial problem sounds like its in the electronics but even if you do pinpoint what electronics got fried I guarantee you have water in the motor if it was sucked that far in.

I say its a matter for insurance.
 
I gotta agree. Contact the insurance co. and have a mechanic look at it. Messing with it could cause further damage. Although if water came out of the intake that doesn't sound good.
 
guess im going to have to call the insurance.

So this is the deal guys.

The car is a salvage title, I bought it for 15k with 17,000 miles in 2006. Never had any major problems with it other than coils. It was wrecked in the front but airbags did not deploy. So i was wondering will my car be considered totalled? I have all those aftermarket items and still got the stock items also. Should i remove them before they take it away to see if its fixable or not?
 
I would.

If you don't get anything decent for the car itself you have those parts to either put on a new LS if thats what you want or you can make profit selling those as well.


Plus if you have water in the motor like that you never know what they may pull on you with that open conical filter on the CAI.
 
im in houston too...but my father wouldnt let me go anywhere after the storm...almost the whole northside was flooded...lol

im straight. im not partin out anything! got too many cars i can put that on except the rims. Just got new falken tires on the rims but those tires will be switched to the benz and ill only be sellin the rims. Sorry to get ur hopes up guys. Ill just switch everything to the new LS
 
yea i figured lol, was worth a shot, i can get that viper alarm installed for real cheap any how so its all good. and in the past 2 months ive spent over 6k on my car so i need to calm down >_<
 
***UPDATE***
Called the insurance company and explained what happened (state farm). THey said to find a mechanic and take it there and they will pay for the tow and any repairs. So i was wondering where should i take it to the dealer or what? I love the car but if they do total it out how is that determined and since my car is salvaged about how much you guys think i will recieve? Can they just put a new motor in it? thanx!
 
In all my instances the insurance company ( progressive ) had shops that I had to choose from that they work with.

Its a tough call IMO since it was a salvage to begin with. This is a predicament you are in I think giving that standard.

Think about the deductible, do you want some mechanic calling it out as totaled or would you pay the deductible to have the repair?

How do they rate book value on a title that has been salvaged?
