Rear wheel bearings, expected life and install..

How may miles should the rear bearing last? How easy are they to install. I have never done them before.

On a side note, my fronts are failing again. This is why I did not make it to the last Boscobel meet. But this time I will have new ones on AGAIN. This will be front set number three. Each time its been NTP brand. I will once again take them back for a refund and get BCA/National this time.
 
You can always try Max for some OEM hubs..

I'm not sure on the rears as I have never chenged them yet.

I have 165K on my 94 166K on my 95 and 223K on my 93.

So I'm not sure when they wear out.
 
Ya, I am nearing that milage also. Thought they may be worth doing.
 
i left one of my nuts loose last week after doing a hub swap... needless to say I needed a new bearing the next day... I took it to my friend at a dealer he had the bearing changed in about 15 mins... the pita is getting the stupid dust shield off, there are 3 bolts that are up against the spindle so you have to use a wrench and they fight you all the way out.. so be sure to take the shields off while the knuckle is still on the car. The bearing I got at autozone for 30 dollars and its a good Timkin.
 
For the rears, it is a cartridge that must be pressed in. Mine went bad around 140k, but I put my car through some pretty serious punishment so don't take that mileage too seriously, lol.

The fronts... mine are still good at 175k, though I'll probably be replacing them preemptively when I rebuild the front end.
 
Well I think I will just order the fronts again. I dont have access to any sort of press for the rears but I know a shop I can get them done at for cheep (labor wise).

I hope this is the last time I have to do the fronts!
 
Hey unity while your on the subject (not to hijack, rather than not open another thread) my front end project is at a standstill while I wait for my drivers side lca (I got 2 passengers side ugh) and the hub is exposed. when I spin the hub the thing with the teeth (wheel bearing?) spins as well, same as when I spin the thing with the teeth. I've read about the wheel bearing seizing to the hub, is that what happened to me?
 
No, its suppose to spin. Thats the ABS sensor ring. It spins so the car knows the wheel is moving. If the car registers speed but the wheel stops during braking it will pump the brake.
 
Yup. Just the ABS. Take a look at your rears - you will see same kinda thing, but inboard, either side of the differential. Oh, and the black things right next to the toothed wheels - they are the ABS sensors - they're magnetic and pick up crap. Might as well give 'em a clean while you are in there.

I guess wheel bearings are of those 'your results may vary' kinda things - mine still original at 110K. Knowing my luck, all four will probably collapse on my way to Wisconsin! Lol.

Why are you coming to wisconsin? seems like a lot of people on this site are from wisconnie? wisconsin loves mark viii's! lol.
 
one of mine went bad after 80k. But remember to retorque the spindle/axle nuts after about 200 miles.

No one around here has marks. Theres a really old guy near my house but beyond that there are just beat down marks.

rockauto has a pretty good price for Timken front hubs.

That's the ones I bought and installed with the front end rebuild and brake upgarde.

This sealed hub deal is all new to me. I'm just use to repacking the wheel bearings and a new seal with every brake job. I've never had a failure.

Looking in the Glove box I found where one of mine had been changed. I didn't care. I want to build my base line with new stuff. I'm keeping the old ones as a break down spare. With that insurance, I shouldn't have a problem.
 
Rock Auto had a problem with my order of AC lines, they were discontinued. Found an alternative and have them add front hubs to the order. I picked up two BCA/NATIONAL brand. Not sure if Timken are good but I am sick of replacing the cheap ones! Also picked up a set of new lock washer things.
 
Timken,SKF, BCA/National are fine sources for our bearings. Roock Auto showed some very good prices on Timken.
