I always wondered if this is possible to do in a Mark:

Thats for a Pontiac. But the idea would be to cannibalize both it and the message center. Problem being is the output. Is it reversed on the display in a Pontiac or does that happen with the use of a mirror?

Just something I wanted to play with. Of course there would have to be room in the dash also. But I think there would be.

Thoughts?

That would be a fun project :)
We used to have a Bonneville with the HUD and it was decent. Any sunlight on the windshield though and it was hard to see...

If I had that I'd feel like I was (really) flying! That'd be a cool thing though

I believe those cars had digital dashes in them. I don't believe you could make the GM HUD wire into the Ford system. But if you could get a digital gauge cluster out of a Ford vehilce, you might be able to adapt it to work. I had a 90 Mercury Cougar once that had a digital dash in it. Reversing the image would either require a mirror, or you could just remove the LCD display and turn it around so that the back lighting shines from the other direction.

Thats what I figured and why I thought taking a message center apart for the display would be easier. Its just a display, but I am sure its not a dot-matrix type like the Mark.

Someday maybe :)

I knew a guy that had a fox body mustang.

rather than mounting the monster tach on the dash he mounted it UNDER/inside the dash facing a mirror that pointed the reversed reflection upwards towards the windshield, which again reversed the reflection making it correct.

It was neat, it worked WELL in the dark and it was "different".

it doesn't take much to impose an image on the windshield, just lay a newspaper up on the dash and you can read its reflection in the windshield.. that is.. if you can read backwards.

If I did not have all this other stuff going on, I would do it.

Also I spoke with a friend in manufacturing. He suggested a mirror to enlarge the display - think opposite of passenger side mirror.

I always wanted to move the message center anyway to install a DVD display or GSP system. Or now that the new iPhone has GPS and touch screen interface for it since it does have video out.

The guy I bought my mark from had removed the message center and had an older tomtom installed in its place in his other mark. I only saw it once and didn't know anything about marks so I didn't really care

They had digital or standard analog gauges.

Our Bonneville didn't have digital gauges in it (on the dash), but the projection was digital (well, symbols + digital numbers)

our analog gauges are not like old analog gauges. They use a signal no
cables. so analog vs digital should not matter
But I am not an electrical engineer

Well the only thing I want to do is move the message center. Not interested in current speed, etc. That would be nice, but if I went that route I would just buy digital gauges and wire them up.

I'm sure it's backlit, you would probably need to find a way to brighten it up, either more bulbs or brighter bulbs. Then it's just a matter of getting the right image.

<-----------YAY! 400th post!!!

yeah, an HUD display would definitely suit the Mark's character - there's just something so dated about the standard message center - reminds me of an 80's home computer ... like an Amstrad or something! Lol.

True it reminds me of a Mac. ;)

I say go for it when you find some time! Would definately be neat.

For the others thinking of HUD, .. it wouldn't have to be digital. Black-face some factory or other analog guages with the numbers transparent, blue bulbs, and blue needles, and a dimmer switch, a mirror.. who knows, maybe we'd have room to shove an extra guage cluster up there. It would be neat.
