Hello again I was sitting here looking through the fmc dealer online engine breakdown and dissassembly procedure for the 3.9L and noticed a few things I thought odd. First off there is absolutely no procedure, or specifications for the shortblock and rotating assembly, there isnt even an exploded view, and secondly, there IS however in the head dissassembly and assembly section a very clear procedure for aligning, removing and installing and diagnosing the vct solenoids on both exhaust cams.... I was under the impression that these engines did not come equipped with vct, I guess I was wrong, my question is has anyone here ever had the rotating assembly from a 3.9 apart and or the valve covers off, im interested in seeing if they are or arnt equipped with vct.

I think Ford calls it VVT, for Variable Valve Timing, but I know what you mean...
Yes, Ford re-designed the 3.9 with VVT, for '03, and newer. This in part, helped it go to 280hp, instead of 252.

Cool I wasnt aware that they gen2's had vct, variable cam timing, at least thats what ford called it in reference to the ztec and svt focus ztec engines, wouldnt suprise me if they called it something else for lincoln tho knowing ford LoL. Any information about the rotating assembly and short block?

The only thing I know is there are zero aftermarket parts/assemblies. Anyone who has modded the bottom end, has done the machine work on stock parts, or they would be one off custom stuff.
There is a guy who recently had some cams done, for his gen1...I havent read up on it for a few days, but pre tune, it sounded nasty!

Also, they are expensive.

I was more interested in why fmc doesnt want its technicians knowing any of the torque specifications of teardown/rebuild procedures, but then again its ford lol so that pretty much answeres my question, if I were going to build up the bottom end I'd just have my machine shop make the pistons and rods at cost and write it off lol but thank you for the information!! much appreciated

It is colloquially known as VVT, but Lincoln calls it "variable cam timing" (at least in the sales literature) because that's what it is.

As for the bottom end, the information is out there somewhere, but I'm not sure where (we have some at LLSOC (http://forums.llsoc.com/), but you have to be a member to access it). It's derived from the Jaguar AJV8, so you might be able to find some information about it from Jaguar sources.

the only parts you can buy are a fully loaded short block - so I guess the dealer would never need to know more than that....

several owners have bent valves - and been able to get it repaired, but everytime it's in the bottom end - it's either I new block or engine.

Again I appreciate the information I was asking in reference because im planning on blueprinting a shortblock and was in need of the factory torq spec's so im not guessing with fastener strech but ill try digging for jag spec's it aught to at least give me a clue lol thanks guys

BTW - it does look like some of the information is avalible....
